Hello, I'm new to reefing, I'm on the east side of cleveland and I'm trying to soak in as much information as possible at the moment. Nice to know that there are some organized people in the area to learn from possibly.

Thanks,

My first suggestion is to move to the Westside. We are cooler and have better LFS.

Welcome!

My first suggestion would be to have your car outfitted with snow tires so you can get out of the snow belt to get to a LFS.

 MJAnderson .. Did you mean cooler as in totally fishgeeked out with more money going to aquariums and supplies than groceries kind of cool?

Itzme: My trailblazer will get me through =)

MJ: What LFS are you refurring to?

Serpantman: You're not that far from me, I'm out in Madison.

My tank is less then two months old but it seems to be holding its own at the moment. I'm looking into replacing my canister filter with a sump / fuge setup but its looking expensive.

Look forward to chatting with you all,

Not far at all.

I believe MJ is referring to Salty Critter in Vermillion which is by far superb. Aquatic Technologies and Tropical Aquarium are also located on the west/south part of town. Unfortunately, there really aren't any good LFS's on the eastside.

Yea they all suck around here, I end up driving to Aquarium Adventure in Parma. In fact I need to make a trip out tonight for some algey eaters, snails, crabs, ect.

IMO, I wouldn't waste your time at AA as they are usually quite overpriced. If you don't feel like making the trek out to Vermillion, I would recommend Aquatic Technologies in Columbia Station for snails, etc. The store is pretty cluttered and not much to look at but they have a lot of stuff and are 100% SW. They tend to be pricey as well but IME, no where near Aquatic Adventure.

Aquatic Technologies, my friend who gave me the tank took me out there to buy my first bits of LR, I did like that store.

Aquarium Adventure has (had) the cheapest LR around though at $5.88lbs a week or two ago. I still need about another 40lbs of LR also.

Cheapest??? LR at $5.88.... the AA LR is more like waste of your money base rock. I would rather pay $.50 cents per lb for lace rock from a garden store and add some livesand to seed the rock than waste my money in that store. AA has a very bad wrap on RC for good reason. Bad information, bad livestock/rock, high prices, high prices, oh and super high prices. Check out www.saltycritter.com and you will see what we mean. Only thing reasonable at AA is their actual tanks (not setups).

For actual quality liverock go to saltycritter or call them and order it from them. Last time I was there they had a whole tub selling for $2.99 a lb which was their "base rock" and would be considered prime LR compared with what AA sells. AT would also be better than AA but nowhere near as nice as SC.

For prime rock at SC like Bali, kaelini, etc... you will pay around $5 per lb, the more you buy the cheaper it becomes... and you get to pick out the pieces you want in big tubs.

Plus you will find the highest quality livestock, corals and other hard goods around for internet prices in a walk in retail store. Trust us on the Critter... Call and talk to Dan or Shawn ask them what LR they have in right now and price for 40 lbs/ + and make the trip out there heck go this weekend... You will not be disappointed.

Thank you for the information, my ignorance costs me yet again =(

I'll check out their site and give them a call. My boss is letting me out early today so maybe I can take a trip out today if they have the snails I'm looking for.

Thanks,

-B

I called out there to Salty Critter and their cured rock is $6+ up to 40lbs and $6 even for 40+lbs

And they are out of base rock

=(

-B

Yeah... I'd like to know about any live rock that is considered "prime" by anyone for 2.99 a lb. 6 bucks for good rock is a pretty good deal.... if it's good. If you are patient, you will find a local Reef Central member will break down a tank and sell off live rock that has tons of growth, hitch hikers, corals, polyps, coraline, etc... for 3 to 5 bucks a lb. I think I see this happen at least once every 3 months or so. Long story short, local fish stores generally have rock shipped in. This rock normally has a certain amount of "die off." Buying nice rock with a bunch of growth from a local RC member and quickly acclimating it to your tank will ensure good healthy rock as opposed to taking a chance on spiking your amonia, nitrates, etc...

Please read post again.... I said their base rock was $2.99 per lb and would be considered "prime" compared to what AA sells as LR... not as good as their fully cured but much better than what AA sells for $6 per lb.

You must keep in mind what type of LR it is as well. As I have purchased 40 lbs of bali LR that due to its light weight will take up as much space as 60 lbs or more of dense base type rock. ... You can also get their fresh rock for like $3.99 per lb at 40 lbs but it is uncured and cure it yourself...

Just trying to help a newb out. And yes even at $6 per lb you are actually getting your money's worth at SC... although they do have LR sales quite often which is where I usually see it for less. Just ask them and they will point you in the right direction. Who knows maybe 20 lbs of light weight Bali rock would fill up your tank... I would make the trip to SC and get your snails and everything else you need and make a decision on the rock when you see it.

I picked up about 60lbs of kealini (or however you spell it) from SC to replace the 100lbs of fiji I got "for a steal" from a local reefer selling his setup before moving that ended up being covered in algae. The 50lbs took up more room than the 100lbs of fiji due to its porous makeup.

Save the $ and buy quality stuff to start. Will save you a headache later.

If you are you patient, try

I bought about 20 pounds of this rock last week and am pretty happy with it. It was fully cured and colorful, had a hitchhiker crab come along. The store has some pretty amazing specimens. I'll be driving to Vermillion more often.

Its an hour + drive for me but I've got some really bad algey bloom going on right now so I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and run out there an grab some snails / crabs. Maybe some rock as well.

i drive an hour and a half to the salty critter anytime it is fully worth it fully.
im going on a limb now and saying aquatic tech has the best rock in ohio although it is like 7.50-10.00 a pound it is fantastic and you can get completely purple rocks for show peices just dont trip on anyting when your in the store
