newbie with a maxima clam

I am very excited to get my first clam. Supposed to be a 3 -4" maxima.

I want it on the sand bed beneath my 250mh lights. I also have 3 t8's overdriven and a t12 actinic overdriven as well. I will put a rock about 1/2 inch under the clam, maybe put something on the side to prevent if from falling over.

if I have to feed it I will use the bowl method. I will feed it golden pearls and phyto (when my culture is finished).

Anything else I should think about?

Yup, a 3-4" clam should have sufficient zooxanthellae to live off of. I encourage you to dose your tank as a whole to improve growth of corals and clams alike, but special feeding for a larger clam isn't required.

Great. On the rock thing, anything special I should know about placing the clam on the sand?

If you have a clam shell for it to atach to that would be a plus...you can find one at a lfs ...just place the shell under the clam and it should atach to it in a matter of hours or a day or so...or like a few of my maximas that refuse to attach to anything grrrrrrrrrr

Being that I am in Jersey, I will hit the shore this weekend, about a 15 minute trip and pic up a shell. Bake it in the oven at 400 for 20 minutes and into the tank.

What would be a good size to grab? Size of the clam ok? Or is that too big?

I have 4 clams right now, lost 3 previously due to a variety of reasons.

Firstly, no need to bell feed your clam, it's fine living off the light from your MH. What's the height of your tank btw? If it starts to fade in color after a few months, start moving it closer to the light.

Clam shell to let your clam sit in should preferably be larger than the clam.

Propping the clam with a rock to prevent it from falling really depends on the clam. I've a clam that just would not sit still no matter how hard i tried to get it to attach to a rock or whatever. In the end it attached to to the glass under 1" of sand...grrrr....

I have a 90 so its about 20 inches from the lights to the top of the sand bed. I can hit the shore for a big old clam shell.

What about acclimating it?

Some ppl say that u should drip acclimatize it. I just dip the bag in the sump and leave it for an hour and the clam goes straight into the main tank.
