Hi all, I'm new to saltwater, have had a freshwater tank for as long as I can remember. I getting the equipment to setup a 100 gal reef tank. Was thinking about getting 2 of the
Hydor Koralia Evolution Pumps 750gph would this be too much water movement, should I have them alternate, or should they be bigger. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

I would say go straight to the 1400's. I started with two 1050's on my 120 and just recently added an MP40 as I didn't have near enough flow.

I don't think 2 - 750's would be enough flow. I would suggest atleast the 1400's.

Every coral is a little different regarding flow. Do a quick google search of what you would like to keep and go from there. Liveaquaria has a basic run down of the needs of each coral, you might try there first.

It might take a little bit of playing around with your powerheads to get your flow adjusted. Placement of the coral in your tank will have alot to do with how much current the area gets. For instance, if you have a coral that needs little flow, there will always be an area of your tank that doesn't receive as much. Get me?

I would almost always error on the side of too much flow rather than not enough.

yeah, the general suggestions tend to be more flow is good.

But what else are you planning?
Are you going to run a sump?
How much flow are you expecting from that?
What type of corals are you planning if any?

Once you start answering those questions do another search or post another question with your idea's and plans.

And Good luck! I'm still trying to figure out the flow and I've, only, been in this hobby for 2 1/2 years now :-D

i have six koralia 1400 on my 150 gal, you need alot of flow for a reef tank, you absolutely need more flow than two 1050's, i had ahuge problem with flow using two 1400- dirt was building up also alot of people dont know this but, when you put fish in the tank, especially some more aggressive fish(like tangs), alot of flow is super super important, it forces the fish to fight the current and take time off in crevices to rest, no time for enemies - also fish get very strong and healthy. bigalsonline.com is having a GREAT sale on koralia's i believe they are 24.99 for 1050's, i think 4 1050 would be okay, probably better than 2 1400's because you have more flow coverage.

my turnover rate in my 90gallon is something like 65-75 times. Running an MP 40 MP 10, 1050, 750. The 1050 and 750 switch on and off 10 seconds each while the MP40 and MP10 are in short pulse mode. The only soft coral I have in my tank at the moment is a torch coral and it LOVES it. My open brain, clam and sps love it too.
