I really like the look of the zoos, I've been reading how toxic they are, do you all really wear the gloves? Are they hard to take care of once they are in your tank or do they have toxins that will kill fish etc.

Theresa,

The toxins can be a bit over exaggerated but should not be overlooked. Zoas and Palys can be very easy to take care of and I take precautions when I remove the zoa from water. Once out of water they can squirt and can cause a nasty infection if they catch you in your eye or mouth (trust me I know). If you are a sensitive person then wearing gloves is a good idea no matter what coral you workwith, but I have never worn gloves. Keep in mind that I don't have allergies to zoas, anemones, or any other coral, but a bristtle worm will give me a good sting.

Inside the tank I worry more about zoa predators than zoa toxins. When I frag or move zoas I wear eye protection and make sure that I don't have any open cuts on my hand. My biggest fear with zoas is being squirted in the eye but this has only happened once over the past four years, and I'll never forget it.

Like I mentioned before, I've had zoas/palys for 4 years now and I only take precautions when I remove them from water.

Ficklefins summary is pretty much all you need, very accurate.

Bear in mind that zoa juice even on your skin can cause allergic reactions. I personally am never affected by them (or any other marine animal, including dwarf lions) , regardless where they get me, but I know many (particularly women for some reason) who develop rashes. I also know someone who's made a trip to the hospital after getting zoa juice in the eyes. (more than a squirt though)
