My wife and I are just getting into reefing and have set up a couple of aquariums. First we set up a 75 gallon African Cichlid tank and it is doing great. Then we deceided to get into saltwater and set up a 20 gallon with live rock, a few corals and a couple of "Nemos" for the grandaughter. So far, it is doing wonderful as well and I plan on doing a larger saltwater reef, probably a 55 or 75 gallon.

We have been to Lucy's Lagoon and The Aquarium Shop in Huntsville, Aquarium Designs and Aquarium Imports in B'ham to look as well as Petco in Decatur. Have heard about a place in Glenco and one near Athens that we want to check out.

We would be very interested in some coral frags to be adding to our tank if anyone around North Alabama have any reasonable. From what we have seen, we like Zoo's and Poly's, Colorful Mushrooms, Xenia and Kenyi. Does anyone have other suggestions?

I have some Kenya Tree (for free) that I could bring you if you go to the NARC March Meeting (I think it will be held in Athens at the Petco) or pm if you are coming to Guntersville anytime soon. You must go to John's at CRA (coral reef aquatics). The fish store at glenco is ok, there is also one at Rainbow City and Argo. I also like to shop at Pet Depot in Guntersville. PD will special order me fish/corals and the prices are fairly reasonable. So I would check out the Pet Depot at Cullman.
Watch this forum and you can usually get a good deal on a used tank if you are interested.
Good Luck,
Monica

Thank you

Thank you

I appreciate the information, I would love some Kenya trees so we may have to drive over one day soon

The next meeting will be at Petco in Decatur on March 15th. I will be posting a new thread on it soon. I am in Madison. If you want some zoanthids, xenia, Kenya tree, etc, I have a lot of extra. You can come to the meeting or you can come over to Madison if you'd like. I live less than 10 minutes from CRA.

Thanks again

Thanks again

You people are fantastic!! We are probably going to Athens today to see some friends and may check out CRA. I'm assuming NARC is a reef club? I'd be very interested in attending some meetings, of course with us just getting started we would have nothing to trade. I want to learn all I can about this hobby and hopefully be able to help others at some point like you folks are helping us.

WOW

WOW

My wife and I were just talking about looking for a good deal on a used aquarium and figured we could buy pieces a few at a time until we had all we needed. First classified ad that I looked at happened to be in Cullman and the guy has a 75 gallon with a oak stand, Coralife lights, skimmer, uv filter, wet/dry filter, power heads, live rock and a few corals for sale. Established aquarium that has been set up 3 years. all for $400. Am I a fool if I don't go get it today???

That sounds like a great deal. If I were you, I'd check it out. Hope you can take a look at the set up while it's still together and running.

More specifically, if you are looking for a set up for soft corals, Coralife light (I assume power compact light fixture) should be sufficient. A majority of people here seems to prefer to use a sump over wet/dry filter set up, but wet/dry filter works well as long as you clean the filter regularly.

NARC stands for North Alabama Reef Club.
CARC is Central Alabama Reef Club.
You should be able to belong to both clubs if you'd like.

NARC is a very informal group. If you show up to our meeting, you are added to our group automatically :D . A new member to whom we can give away excess xenia, GSP, and kenya tree...haha.

NARC has no dues, no officer, therefore no structure. The only rule that I know of is to get together and have fun :) We do some useful things sometimes, such as show and tell on our (sometimes crazy) DIY ideas. Sometimes we even score some free door prizes, depending on who is hosting our meeting ;) Decatur Petco by the way told me that they will have door prizes :)

Good deal

Good deal

We will make plans to attend the Decatur meeting and we are bums so we will take excess, LOL. Are you gonna be around today if we make trip to Athens?

Tomoko,
I'd be interested in some Zoanthids and will compensate for some frags. BTW, all of the frags I bought from you previously are doing wonderful! I'll post some shots of the new tank this weekend. Thanks!

GCamp13,

If you have not noticed yet, Reefkeeping online magazines have a number of great articles aimed at new reefers. Check out some old issues which often offer good primers on important equipment.

JoeTSI - are you looking for any color in particular? I have to frag some zoanthids that have crawled onto my frag tray. I will try to post some pictures when I get it done.

Tomoko,
Not picky about the colors, I have some greens which were hitchhikers on some live rock I bought but any will do!
