Hi all.
Just found CDMAS here on RC.
I am planning on starting a reef tank.

I am in the process of moving, which means Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m rethinking my aquarium situation.

Currently I am researching, lurking in forums, listening to reef podcasts, saving $, drooling over everyoneââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s tanks, and I think I just found some locals to learn from. It may be many months or even a year until Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m ready to start my tank, but it said on your website that I can join anyway.

So, will you have me?

Nick

I see I just missed the monthly meeting

of course we'll have you......
Your doing the smart thing, which is researching. This hobby can be very rewarding if you take your time. And can also be VERY discouraging if you rush into things. As lots of questions and read a lot and you'll be fine.

Can't play favorites....

To RC and The CDMAS Forum

...keep on posting...no tank required...just your enthusiasm. :D

Thanks all for the warm welcome!

WOW! Reef central is huge!. I've been posting on another site for freshwater advice. I love the site but RC seems to be a bigger community.

I currently have a 60g freshwater with live plants, CO2 injection, etc.. I'm not giving up my freshwater, I like it too much.

I already have lots of questions but I don't want to inundate you guys with lots of mundane requests. When you guys post questions, do you post in the CDMAS Forum, the other RC Forums, or both?

Current,

Welcome to CDMAS! Always good to see that someone can use the word inundate!

As for postings, I usually post to CDMAS if I want info that has to do with our region, like, which LFS has what, or, how did you build your lights and can I see them? If I have questions which I know will be conflicting or divergent, than I will use the RC forum "Reef Discussion". If I have researched a question and get 50/50 responses, I go to MarineDepot.com/forums and ask experts like Calfo, Berneman, and Stenve Pro.

We do have experts on CDMAS as well ( certainly not me, by a long shot!).

You are going about things in the right way. Read and learn and things will go well. Come to some meetings it great to be able to see a bunch of different tanks to get ideas of what you want in the planning stage.

See as many tanks and setups as possible. This really opens up a lot of questions, that just can't be easily answered through words.....
Welcome- you found your way to a real good group of people. While RC is huge, we the locals are not. It makes a difference- and there is a lot of experiences here that can help.

Hey current - welcome. I am still new to reefs and this group is the best.

I really want to try a planted aquarium, but don't know the basics. Can you send me a site to get started?

thanks,
sara

Hi Sara,

http://www.plantedtank.net/ has a nice forum,

and for inspiration try the AGA annual contest
http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2005.cgi

Agreed.
I often go to the AGA contest to drool, I mean to get inspired.

By chance the first Aquarium Forum I started posting to was
http://www.aquariumadvice.com
I have no experience with the salt water section, but I have been very pleased with the advice I received from the planted section. The people are very friendly, helpful, and patient. They have some good stickies about fertilization and CO2.

I stumbled across the plantedtank.net after I began posting on AA so I just stuck with AA. But it seems like a good forum. The user tank galleries look very nice and I'm sure they know what they're talking about, but I have no experience asking questions in the forums.

I am fairly new to planted aquariums too and I learned a few lessons the hard way. Who'da thunk some planted aquarists have to regularly dose phosphate and even Nitrate! I had to dose Nitrate to clear up my Green Water problem.

Anyway, I really like planted tanks.
Let me know if you start posting to anywhere, I may be able to answer some of your questions.
