New macros, still mastering the new beast.

This was taken at iso6500, for no other reason to see how the D700 performs.

Just found this little guy hiding, really tiny, maybe 1/8" in size. The live view function is great for macros, lets me use the LCD screen and digitally zoom in to fine tune the focus.

DR?
Occupation: Moving to Dominican Republic, very soon!

DR = Dominican Republic

Threw me off with the DR, thought it had something to do with photography.

We found a place on the ocean with 75' of beachfront for less than 200k, a fixer upper on the ocean, go figure... Also have several friends who have condos in the Punta Cana area, nice area, more resort oriented for people who are retired and that would be me.

You can even get ocean front condos for 90k. The economy is stable, its a huge european resort that draws people from all over the world, short flight from Miami.

Recty, see that your in AK...I spent 5 years up their, loved it!! x-airforce, got out and worked for the Native American Hospital and had to fly out every 2 weeks to a remote village to do exams. Totally insane places I've been, Dutch Harbour, Akitan, Shishmarif, White Horse, Dead Horse etc.... I've been to almost every remote village in AK, flown in on a cesna with ski's...

Yep, Alaska is a pretty cool place.

My old job I used to fly every Friday to 3 different remote villages, I've got some pretty scary flights under my belt :)

Now I work for the main electric company in the state and only fly occasionally, I actually miss it.

There are some pretty cool remote villages here, too bad you didnt have your camera back then, could get some amazing shots on the flights.

Yeah, I was using a Minolta 7000 (?) AF back then, don't have the pics as that was almost 30 years ago.

We flew into one village and somebody had smuggled in some whisky, the entire village was stone cold drunk, they were trying to race us in snowgoes (snowmobiles) up and down the landing strip as we tried to land, finally landed and then they started fighting over who won, ended up leaving as we were there for 24hours to do eye exams, kinda hard to do with 100% of the patients hungover...Not the first time this had happened.

Elbow room bar in dutch harbour/unalalaska what a total dive!!!

Portage glacier, bird room, Flat top, man those are some incredible places to visit, we are going to try and make a trip this year...

I had a quick question for you:
how do you like the sigma 24-70mm and thd 70-200mm?
I'm thinking of getting rid of my 18-200 nikkor lense and getting the same as yours (of course I would rather have the 18-70, 70-200 nikkor, but it's way too much for my budget) and the price for the sigma is doable for me.

oh yeah... and why did you choose the nikon 105mm macro over the sigma 105mm macro?

I am totally happy with both sigma lens, I went with then for several reasons, mostly based on feedback from other photographers and posted technical reports.

24-70mm EX is finally starting to loosen up as the zoom is somewhat stiff, this has been a common issue but I kinda like the stiffness. You simply can't go wrong with this lens. The only thing that kinda ticked me off was that it uses 82mm filters which cost a fortune.

I got the Nikon 105 VR lens when I got my original D40, I was just starting to get serious about photography and honestly the 105mm was the macro lens listed on the Nikon site and I really didn't know any better. It's a fantastic lens, love the optics and have no complaints. I haven't really done any research or comparison with other lens.

Im using sigma's fixed focal 105mm. I love the lens in general. Nikon's optics still have a slight edge though imo. I was just too cheap to fork the extra cash.

Cool photos by the way! thanks for postin

for the same price as the sigmas, you can get a non-vr version of the nikkor 105mm. :D

I'm kinda obsessed with these orange and green cloves, pic is OK, not the best. Color is off but details are good.
