Hello all,

A very well intending family member picked this up for me to put in the tank. That being said, I have a couple of questions...

1. What exactly is it.
2. Some care guidelines.

Let me add that the tank is SPS dominated, very mature, and has excellent water quality. The issue is not general care being, just that I dont have much exp keeping LPS in general or any of these types of brain corals ( I think thats what it is)specifically.

As an FYI, I have placed it at the bottom of the tank, lighting is a 250w 10K. I am concerned that maybe the flow is to much. It doesnt get direct current, but it does get a lot of flow over it.

Alright, thats it, any help woudl be appreciated including whether I should pass it on to someone else.

Thanks!

Looks like a bleached out Lobophyllia, judging by the tooth-like skeleton sticking out of the polyps tissue. Usually, Lobo's don't recover easily from damage.

they like lower flow.. lower light.. regular feedings like bi-weekly would help, but it looks pretty far gone. Feed it meaty stuff like shrimp, silversides, etc.

Pretty far gone?! I consider myself a glass-is-half-empty guy, but you must be a throw-the-glass-away-it's-not-worth-drinking-from-anymore person.

That does kind of look like it might be an open brain, I don't think it is a lobo, but if it is a lobo you shouldn't be as worried as he implies. I've nursed rotting bits of lobos back to health from the depths of their skeletons (only to have them stung to death by a fallen hydnophora, but that's another story) and my oldest lobophyllia has taken a number of falls, beatings, and stings, and looks better today than it ever has. If it's not opening reduce your flow and set some food on it. I don't think that's in bad shape at all. Post pictures when when it's feeling better and colored up!
