Next Club meeting

Can we discuss emergency procedures for this hurricane season? Maybe come up with some way to save corals and fish in the event of a power lost.

There are 4 ways to help corals in the event of a power loss.

1. Generator - and every thing will be fine.

2. Have enough batteries on hand to run things for a while and recharge at a friends house.

3. Battery powered Air bubbler - and the tank will survive a few days.

4. Pray.

Heck if its the right temp out you can always move the corals outside into tupperware.

1a. Gas, lots of it. I ran through about 60 gallons in 6 days after hurricane Wilma. Didn't have any tank losses.

Also, make and store extra RO/DI water before the storm. Water supplies are sometimes disrupted, and after repairing line breaks it's common for utilities to run extra chlorine and/or ammonia to keep the water sanitized. You don't want to be putting that into your tank.

One suggestion I like to give is to take a computer UPS and run an air pump on it. For just 3 or 4 watts, you could throw a few bubblers into the tank and make plenty of flow with some PVC airlifts. Significantly more than a battery powered one, plus, a setup like that could run for days without a recharge.

Also, the June/July meetings will not be at the normal location. June will be at the Seaquarium in Miami, and for July the board is trying to put together a turtle release.

I like the idea of disaster planning for reefers. perhaps we could get a list of volunteers with standby generators to help those less fortunate.

I bought a generator when i did my buildout and would be willing to babysit corals in my sump and tank as long as i can get gas.
