Niger Trigger reef safe?

So what is the verdict with these guys can I put them in my reef tank..
Cleaner shrimo, peppermint shrimp... clean up crew...

for people that have them, how big are yours,a nd what do you guys have with your triggers???? I have always wanted a trigger. I love the way they look, but I have always been concerned about whether or not they would get along with smaller fish (clown, firefish) or inverts. I do not want to buy any fish that would make a snack out of a $20 cleaner shrimp ;)

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack, but I think my questions are along the sme line as irky's.

Dang... Well its payday and I think I am getting ready for a new trigger!!! I am taking my poweder blue tang back to the store today. The LFS never should have sold it to me and I should have done secondary research other than asking the guy about the fish. Seems they are extremely hard to keep... My guy just never looked like he got his sh** together so hopefully the fish store can get him to a better home. Albeit I have had him for 9 weeks and he eats.. He does not have that super healthy look I see in other PBT's. So I am going for a much easier species.

My Niger trigger was a very peaceful tank mate until he got the taste for my fire shrimp then He had to go

If you are truly worried get a blue jaw trigger... they are gorgeous and mine gets along fine with my inverts.

As for your Powder Blue, if it isnt doing well it probably has a better chance in the tank of someone here rather than the fish store, I would post and see if someone wants it (I'm tempted, but i have enough big fish).

The Nigers have generally been found reef safe, but get huge, like 12"+, and are known to get nasty when they do. The best bet is a blue throat/jaw, sargassum, or crosshatch. The blue throat is the most commonly available. I have a sargassum and he has been great so far, hes about 5" right now.

I had a Niger for about a year before he went carpet surfing. He was a model citizen of the shire... He never even bothered my shrimp but he did get chased around a lot by my pygmy angel... He's a little b@$tard!

so a crosshatch triger can be reef safe? Would it be better to try and find one of those mentioned triggers when they a very small? could i keep one by itself in a 30 gallon frag tank/ with 20g refuge until it got to big?

oh and sorry about the slight hijackment. I like you have always wanted a trigger

Did you ask them about the powder blue and how hardy it was? Did they lie to you?

BTW if anyone is interested, there is a BUEATIFUL blue jaw at GoFish Aquariums. Yes know I work there, not trying to make a sale, this fish is just awesome.

At certain times of year sargassum triggers can be found a bit smaller (3-4"). Blue jaws are the easiest to find...Id call around to the various LFS and see what they have.

liveaquaria has a 3.75" blue jaw right now for $80, altho you should be able to find it local for less.

Yeah the guy said they were hardy and easy to care for... I learned when I got home that was not quite the story. A lesson learned however, I kept the fish alive and eating I just wished he would have taken to my tank.

BTW, I got a goby and shrimp to replace the PBT. Just my luck they made their den where I can not see them. JERKS!

The one at GoFish, I belive is $100 and is around 8". Someone please go get it! Its been at the store for at least a month, probably more. Its such a nice looking fish, Id like to think someone here picks it up as opposed to some schmoe that walks in off the street.
