Niger triggers. Good bad?

You might get more replies in the aggressive fish section. With corals they are normally pretty good about leaving things alone, but can be quite mixed with tank mates. They tend to start off nice and turn into terrors once they get some size on them.

+1 Mine started out a cute little guy the size of a quarter and grew much faster than my clown trigger and Huma and once he hit around 6 inches he ruled the tank and was by far the most aggressive fish in the tank. My father in law has one that seems to not grow and is timid so I guess it depends on male/female or just the individual fish.
 
the niger and the bluejaw's are probably the most reef safe triggers out there.....i had a niger for about 7months in my 75gal, only issue i had was he ate my sandsifting star..other then that such a cool fish
 
Nigers get big, that imo is the biggest problem with them.

I've since sold him, it was 8 months ago or so and he has grown to about 14 inches now including the tail streamers, in this video he was about 12 inches with tail.

As far as being peaceful, they have the reputation for being peaceful and also for not munching on corals, but once they get bigger they are the boss.
 
I have I had my Niger Trigger for 2+ years and has grown from 2" to 3", but he is very fat. He is not aggressive at all with my other fish, but I dont know how well they do in reefs.

I'd put the crosshatch and sargassum with the bluejaw, and all of those much more reliably reef safe than nigers, which, IMO, are the least predictable of the triggers. I've seen them be absolute terrors, and I've seen them be model citizens.

I went snorkaling off of Hawaii last year and ran into a group of nigers that were about the size of a 20 long tank not including streamers. Ohh and they were all *******s came right over to me and started nudging me around no nipping but one of the most agressive fish I've delt with in the wild.

Nigers really are 4th in line for least aggressive. Xanthichthys are the best option, Melichthys 2nd (Pinktails, Black Durgeon), Sufflamen 3rd (Halfmoon/Lei, Bluethroat). These two latter genra of triggers get overlooked far too often. which is a shame.

Granted any chance of keeping inverts with a Sufflamen is nil, they aren't particularly aggressive with tankmates. As pointed out in this thread, there's a big difference between a 3" Niger, and an 8".

i havent seen him yet but she said he was fairly small. I do plan on going to a 150 or 200 soon. most sites that sell them said 70 is enoughe but im sure i know y that is $$$$$$$$

I have one and it's growing fast. Now I'm slightly concerned. :p

Recty, what wrasse is that? Beautiful fish.
 
They may eat a occasional member of your clean up crew but thats to be expected. Keep him well feed & happy & you should have no problems. They def have a very dog like personality. Mine does some funny/weird stuff for a fish.
 
I was going to mention a Pinktail but Aquanight beat me to it. Mine is in a full reef, sps dominant, with quite a few tank mates.
 
I started w/ one 4" niger. He was a well behaved fish. I got greedy and added a 2nd. He was prob. 6". I later added a sargassum and 2 blue throats. The largest niger got too aggressive and I lost the blue throat pair & sargassum. Now, I have none. It is def. hit/miss and I agree, as they grow, expect more aggression.

It's a rainbow wrasse, or a cortez rainbow wrasse or some people call them paddlefin wrasse. I loved the guy. Very active.
