Nikon CoolPix P1 or Canon S80

I have a Nikon 3100 but want to upgrade to a higher MegaPixel camera. I'm not ready for the SLR so I wanted one of the better Point and Shoot cameras.

I'm looking at the Nikon CoolPix P1 or the Canon PowerShot S80 both have 8.0MP.

Any suggestions?

I"m curious how you came down to those two models- is it purely because you want 8mp? Are you wanting 8mp because you plan on making very large prints? Both of those models will produce very nice images I'm sure, but the lenses are somewhat limited, especially in terms of close-up performance (although the Nikon should be better than the Canon in that department).

I have continued my research and I'm open to suggestions. So many options and I'm such a novice when it comes to what I should be looking for in a camera. I would like a high MegaPix camera to produce larger prints if I want.

Can you give me some suggestions as to what to look for or what brand you recommend?

If you have a few minutes take a look at this Reefkeeping Magazine article-- that will help you with some of the terminology and such.
Pretty much all of the major manufacturers have decent cameras so the best thing to do is narrow down your choices and then go to a camera store and play with the models you've narrowed it down to. They all have different menus/buttons etc and chances are good you will find one that's easier to use than the others.
Also, take a look thru the last several pages of the forum here- people have posted pictures and asked questions about many different models.
You can narrow down the options by deciding what kinds of pictures you want to take-- super close close-ups? Sports? Landscapes? Family vacation pics? Decide what is most important to you and we should be able to make some more specific recommendations.
