Nikon D40x

I want to get a Nikon D40x, but I don't know if the timing is right. I was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me. I am interested in getting a housing for it, but I cannot afford one at the moment. I'm not sure when I'll be able to afford one either. Is it still worth me getting the camera even if it is a few years before I can afford the housing? I would still use it for taking pics of my tank among other things, I'm just wondering if it will "go out".

I've had my D40x for about 4 months now and use it all the time (outdoor as much as for my tank.) I wasn't sure if I should buy it because I didn't know how much I would use it, but it was well worth the money and I find I use it more often than I thought I would. Two things to consider though, you'll want better glass than the kit lens, I've bought two since I picked up the camera and the can run you a few bucks. Also a decent photo editor, I know there is free ware out there but in my opinion working with RAW files in photoshop elements is worth the $100. I'd say it's a solid investment and you can build on it over time and you will find yourself using it more than you think.

If you can still get the D40 it might better fit your budget. There are only a few differences. I have been very happy with mine and the kit lens is great.

I don't believe so. I'm beginning to get really confused. This will be my first dslr and it's a little overwhelming, trying to pick out the right one. The D80 also seems like a good choice and I just found a website that sells them at the same price as the D60.

Be very careful of "discount" camera outlets. Most of them are con-artists.

Check any vendor with resellerratings.com before you give them your credit card information.

The D60 is basically the D40x with a few differences. It includes a VR lense, a sensor that intuitively changes the LCD screen, and a start stop shooting mode.

Okay..thank you very much for the tip. I found that some people were ordering from them on another site and I thought they would be safe...guessed wrong. Thanks again.

Most of those "discount stores" have links, to "ratings" sites. The problem is that own both sites; that's why it's important to check them out via a 3rd party.

You, honestly, can't go wrong with B&H Photo/Video, Adorama or Calumet.

I've spent at least $15K with B&H in that last couple of years and highly recommend them. The only problem is that they're closed for Passover so you can't order until next Monday.

they don't have the d40x either

That's because it's, now, an older model. They do carry it used.

They are not carrying the D40x but they are carrying the D40 in kits. I don't know how much you are looking at spending but you might want to consider the D60 kit for your first step into DSLR if you want to go Nikon.

The other thing to remember with DSLR is that while the camera body is important, the "glass" or lens is even more important (or at least that's how a fair number of folks feel). Camera bodies come and go with improvements in technology but good high quality glass lasts a long time (and generally has great resale value too if you ever have to bail out....versus lower end stuff that you generally take a bath on if you have to sell).

Just some food for thought. And if you haven't spent any time at this website yet be sure to research over at www.dpreview.com

Good Luck and happy shopping!!

Oh, and to second beerguy....I LOVE B&H....you can always buy with confidence. Great store.

What he said! However I think your first choice is really either the D80 (has the autofocus drive motor) or the D40. After that you can look for kits you like. I have been really happy with the D40 kit lens. Good luck, and do some reading on www.dpreview.com.

First of all, I want to thank you guys for all the help so far. I've been trying to get help like this for a while now.

In everyone's opinion, which would be the better camera for entry level D80 or D40 or maybe D40x. Keep in mind that I want to eventually use it for saltwater, specifically for macro shots. I personally am leaning towards the D80 because of the autofocus feature. Also, I think you may all be Nikon guys, but I played with a Canon XTi tonight and thought it was a nice camera. Thoughts?
