Nikon or Panasonic

I can't search yet as my membership has not been upgraded so I apologize for what is surely an over-discussed topic. However, I need advice. (also posted this on nano-reef so sorry for the repeat if you have seen it)

I have found two cameras that I believe are in my price range. I found one on my own, the Panasonic LZ2. I found another someone suggested in a thread on N-R, the Nikon L1.

Nikon

Panasonic

Can anyone suggest an advantage of one over the other? I will be going to France at the end of June and would like a good travel camera. At the same time, I would like a good camera to take close up pics of corals. Atleast something that takes better pictures than this:

Thanx for any info.

Where is Reewik when you need him?
You might want to post in the photography forum here on RC.....not a clue myself.

Canon A85 here...it has a manual focus. Anything with Macro mode and a manual focus will do better than what you have. The auto-focus never goes where you want it....at least with me.

thanks for the focus tip. ill keep that in mind ;)

For a very reasonable price point and shoot I love my kodak Easy share DX7630. Its very compact and gives great shots for a novice who doesn't wanna get into lenses and focusing... My dad has the next smaller MP and its much bulkier so try to stay with the smaller size if you can. Ebay $270 shipped for mine :)

is a easter pic from Sunday, notice the coler and clarity...

Not the best camera by far but on a buget I love it!!

I have always liked Nikon stuff. Those are some nice pics angela. Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the advice offered and I hope to make a decision soon. I know that I will want to upgrade at some point but I have to find something in my budget that will allow me to get to France with some money left over lol.

Here is a sample pic I found:

collitchboy, What kind of camera was that pink flower pic taken with? It lookes pretty nice. Mine does a lot better on flowers and stuff than my tank. Tank macroes are hard for any camera I think.
