Nitrate filter

Hi

Iwas given a Tunze combi filter which had been used for about 18 months .
I cleaned it out and set it up in sump on my 35 g tank about 6 months ago
The rapid filter works well but the nitrate filter does not seem to make any difference
Should i change the filter media ?, or is there anything else i can try

It is important that the nitrate test kit be of a higher quality and test Nitrate and not total nitrogen or else the results may not accurately reflect what is happening. I would make sure the irrigator is hooked up properly and water is actually going to the media as it should and that this is not clogged. The cartridges serve as the carbon source and it may be necessary in some circumstances to use a food like acetate for the bacteria in a low carbon environment.
