Nitrate / Nitrite levels.

I had a bunch of snails die on me so I assumed I should check my water parameters.

Are there any other ways of controlling NO2 and NO3 other than partial water changes?

Has your tank completed cycling yet?
The presence of nitrites would indicate that your tank is cycling.

Having 1# of cured liverock per gallon of water, growing macro-algae in a fuge, DSB in a fuge or Remote location, having a cycled tank, not overstocking or stocking too fast, loosing the canister filter, loosing bioballs, loosing sponge filters, etc.... Are all methods to controlling the water parameters that you inquired about.

I apologize for my ignorance, but what is DSB in a fuge? What do you mean by loosing the canister filter, bioballs, etc?

Thanks.

You are saying that I should eventually get rid of my filter? I assume I would then be solely depending on my skimmer and live rock?

you dont need anything else, live rock with vigorous water flow and a efficent skimmer is just fine, however as playa mentioned a refugium is also great

What determines how long it will take a reef tank to complete it's cycle?

It is a 75 gal with 80lbs of live sand, not quite 1lb of live rock per gal.

you need to test, this is my opinion on the cycle, test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate daily, eventually you will see ammonia and nitrite rise then fall and eventually become zero, during this time nitrate will rise and rise, when ammonia and nitrite has been 0 for 3-4 days then do a water change to dilute the nitrate and then add a cuc, keep monitoring though, the actual time is a total guess but can last up to six weeks, although it can be a lot less

yes i use a 405 mearly as a powerhead, i used to use living rock in it 6 months or so ago, however i dont now, sometimes i stick a bag of carbon in it but normally its completely empty, its just being used as water movement, i am going to remove it soon completely and install a tunze in its place, my comments to mangelo stand, there is no need for a canister, however if mangelo wants to keep it to run carbon then fine

clean up crew, example hermit crabs and turbo snails to mention 2 types, however there are lots of different cuc

In my canister I do have a filter pad that supposed to help remove amonia. It's been zero for a long time. I also have ceramic pieces to stimulate the biologica filter growth, and carbon.

well i will let other reefers say their bit on canisters, ive said mine, as for the carbon, great stuff ive used it for as long as i can remember

CUC=Clean Up Crew, i.e. Hermit Carbs, Snails etc to help clean up algae, detrivous, etc.

As far as canisters, IMO, if correct maintanance is applied, they are very effective....especially if you have a large bio-load.
I'm running two. 1 with all carbon and 1 all Phosban.

Is that a yellow leather in your aquarium? I had one that was absolutely perfect when I brought him home. A few weeks had gone by then he started to open up less and less. One day I went to move him to see if that would help and he just fell apart (ie. was already dead).

Any idea what happened? He was one of my favs!! :(

You guys are great! I really mean it.

What is considered proper maintenence? What is Phosban?

...Sorry. I looked up Phosban on my own. I didn't realize it was filter media.

yep it is, not sure what happened to yours mangelo, ive read that they are unpredictible and can just die or some sulk for days, all this for no apparent reason, just dont know mate, you could have had perfect conditions and maybe not your fault
