Nitrate Reactor

Has anyone had success with nitrate reactors? My sump cannot keep up with the waste my fish put out. Is there a seamless method?

Randy discusses your options with nitrate problems in this article:

Nitrate reactors will work but there are concerns with the effluent if it is not properly maintained and monitored.

I personally feel dosing a carbon source like Vodka would be a better alternative. This method can have draw-backs also and one should be familiar the the proper method to administer it.

if you have an old calcium reactor, just buy some sulpher media, load it and set the drip rate. i set one up, and all my SPS put on fur coats!!!! super extension. very happy with it.

I myself had the same problem. My sump (fuge) was being fed directly from my aquarium. What I did was cook my rock, bought a sulphur denitrator, shut down my fuge (now I use it to house my denitrator), change out my sand and now I have 0 nitrates. I actually have less rocks in my tank now because I went with a more open bonsai theme. I cooked the rocks to get any gunk that may have been in there. I replaced my sand because I believe it was just used up! I did an inch and some change just to cover my bottom because Initially I wanted to go bare bottom. Also I bought a wave maker to keep more stuff suspended so it can be skimmed out of the tank etc...Tried dosing vodka but it didn't work for me...maybe because I had other forces working against what it was supposed to do.

i tried vitamin C dosing...meh seemed to make my skimmer work overtime, but didn’t really move my nitrates too much. i don’t have anything bad to say about Vit C dosing, didn’t seem to hurt anything. Have to say again, running sulfur in my old reactor has really zeroed nitrates, plus it knocked out my high alkalinity issue, good counterbalance. i test every so often, but seems a 10-15% water change every two weeks keeps everything in line. I might do a large 40% WC every 3 months or so.

Good luck
