nitrate readings

what is everyone's opinion on nitrate readings consistently reading 20 ppm .i do weekly water changes have a skimmer that takes a couple weeks to fill the cup and tank is well established??

20ppm is ok for most things . it might brown some sps and seriatopora won't like it much though. Natural surface seawater runs around 0.2ppm or a bit higher.

what can I do to reduce it. I already do weekly water changes. the only thing I am not sure about is if I get a better skimmer will it pull more and help with the nitrate? I have a asm g1 x I don't like the way I have to dial it in its not very convenient and I have to unplug it each time I empty the cup or it overflows everywhere. if I push the tune down I can't figure out where it was prior.

GAC can help.
Removal of any filter media like bio balls or ceramics or anything in a high flow area to encourage localized ammonia oxidizing/nitrifying bacteria.
Cleaning detritus out and the sand bed too if there is one.
A denitrator of some type will work.
I've used a diy sulfur dentirator in the past with very good results.
Organic carbon dosing( vodka, vinegar, etc) will also keep them low.
I use two larger asms and have for over 6 years . I like them. You can put a plug in switch in the receptacle and plug the skimmer into that . Then you can just turn it off when you remove the cup. Th skimmer I know of all just keep running when ou take teh cup off and they will all ovrflow. There might be one with some feture I haven't seen.

More live rock or substrate to provide denitrifying bateia with extra surface area may be useful.

Also have to evaluate your feeding schedule. Is it possible your overfeeding?

Rinsing frozen foods?

feed once a day don't feel I'm over feeding and I do rinse my frozen food. seems like I'm on the right track but maybe the tank is just maturing so good that my sump can't handle it anymore. I hope not!
