nitrite 0 after 4 days with new lr

added LR to my tank about 4 days ago
my nitrite is reading 0
so here are my thoughts

the ammonia hasnt turned to nitrite yet
my kits bad
or the cycle is done
i dont have an amonia test kit cause i never cared to test on my old tanks and these are the same test kits


a fewdays ago about a day after adding the live rock the water turned brown. and i coulent see in at all it clearer up in a couple of days
so my question to you is
do you think my cycle is done or should i get an ammonia kit and test
there are already some pods in the tank (
btw rock wasnt ver porus and wasnt much on it so
reason im so hesitant that it isnt done is that last time i used LR to cycle it took over a month but that was fish store live rock and was sitting in a box for a month or so lol
so what would you do ( skimmer also slowed down alot )

4 days in? just live rock? you are just barely starting to cycle. ammonia usually peaks in around 2 weeks, THEN nitrites. nitrite isnt going to show up in 4 days...

might i add that this tank has had dead things in it for about a year ( i throw somthing in to keep the cycle going. usualy i use some phyto/zoo plankton or a dead fish
might this of speed up the cycle time.

i had nitrite show up last time after a fewdays when i used LR


im gonna get a ammonia test kit and see if there is any amonia and if not im gonna add some danmsals or chomis. ( no not to use but i actualy like these fish and plan to keep them )

If you put in cured liverock in a cycle tank it sometimes have no cycle or a little one. I put liverock cured in a 15 gal and in one week had snail and hermits in the tank and 2nd week put in corals and a month later started adding fish. Expect a large cycle if you put uncured liverock in a cycle tank or not cycle tank.

I added 135lbs of cured LR to a 110 and it cycled in a week.

the rock wasnt precured altho it was very clean lol not much hanging on it and it didnt cloud the water when i first added it (clouded a few days later)
anyway i am seeing pods already and thats gotta be good

If it was uncured I have a sneakin suspicion that if you add fish like you suggested you were going to do you will have one of those threads that says "all my fish are dying."

But it sounds like you are going to do what you want so good luck. I hope it works out for you.

At the very least I would purchase some good accurate test kits, Salifert comes to mind, and test the tank in 2 weeks. If it is good, there you go.

that isnt live rock in the pic. if its been sitting around that long its pretty much dead. LR arrives wet. looks like base rock to me. you will not have much of a cycle till you get LR. ammonia is only one factor. test kits!!! you need a complete kit containing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. also alot of research on reef central would help. if you use uncooked shrimp its more bacteria. plus more humane, and you dont torture the fish.

Its most likely that the cycle is not over if the rock was fully cured it may be. But I would go real slow adding fish maybe one small fish wait three weeks and add another if the new test kit checks every thing is ok. Just perceide with caution.

i agree you prob. added base rock and not LR which you won't see any cycle due to nothing is dying off of it.

no i added LR if you are looking at my tank thread i havent posted LR picts yet
so what you are seeing is baserock
iv set up plenty of tanks in the past and this one was just being wierd.
the no2 was high the day after i added lr and then was gone. thats why i thought the cycle finished. ( usualy i dont have a tank up for a year befor i add liverock so was just a lil confuddled)
im not stupid and wouldent add a fish to a tank if there is any ammonia

well today the no2 is back and the skimmer started up again. i guess somthing died in my my lr

water tested at LFS today and there was "0 ammonia" but the guy didnt wait 20 minutes like it says to..
sooo i got a fish and a danmsal ( i love them. there hyper and iv never had a problom with them) also got my own test kit for ammonia
got home tested and ammonia was.... well i didnt bother comparing because after 3 minitues it was green and still getting darker
so the fish is in my nano now and will stay there until the big tank is ready
( i wanted the nano to be invert only tank )

i have ammonia kit as of today. i have nitrite i have ph . i have CA i am out of nitrate kitand the lfs didnt have any instock unless i wanted to buy a kit...( im getting a salifert kit next time i order online)

yeah pods after 4 day.
usualy they show up after cycle
but my tank has hundreds on the glass in my refuge since i added the LR
that is why i was thinking the rock was already cured ( iv used cured andnon cured before and when i used cured the cycle is usualy done in under a week)

also i talked toliveaquaria and they said the rock isnt precured so...

Sorry goda, wasn't really trying to be a smartaleck, I've just never seen pods in a tank that is 4 days old. Most, I guess that is the key word, tanks that I have ever been associated with took far longer than 4 days to get any real kind of life in the tank.

I don't think anyone thinks you are an idiot, I don't, however I am confused by some of your comments that's all.

Good luck with your set up. I have found that Salifert test kits are very easy to use and seem pretty accurate. I think they are much better quality than anything you can get at the local fish store.

anyways. pick any square inch of glass in the refuge and there will be atleast 2 pods on it. ( main tank is acrylic and the glass is clean so i guess they cant hold on. i do see a few on the sand)

also just saw a small thin white thing i think it was a worm. it disapeared into the sand didnt get a good look

If the live rock was clean, you might never see anything much in the way of a "cycle". I would let the tank sit for a few weeks just to be sure, though. Something big in the live rock might decide to die...
