I have had my tank set up for 3 weeks. Part 2 has been in for 2 weeks. My ammonia is 0 but Nitrites 0.2. Should I change water or just wait. Will Nitrites go down to 0? Is this part of cycle? How long usually?
1) 10- 20% water changes are always a good thing There are virtually no circumstances where a partial water change is not beneficial.
2) After the tank is fully cycled your nitrites should be very nearly undetectable. Do you have any reading on nitrates? When nitrates appear and nitrites go to 0 this is a sign the tank is pretty much fully cycled and partial water changes will then bring down nitrate levels.
3) Your nitrite reading may just be testing 'noise'. What test kits do you use?
This whole nitrite thing confuses me. Some people say that any nitrite is toxic. Others say don't even bother to measure it because not toxic. Which is it? Toxic or not toxic to fish?
Your nitrite level at .2 is nothing to worry about as far as being toxic or killing your fish or inverts, and again may just be testing inaccuracy. The Red Sea test kits are not exactly world renowned for being highly accurate IMO You may want to try another brand of test kits.........API makes inexpensive test kits that are surprisingly accurate.
The reason many do not even test for nitrite on established tanks is because after a tank completes the cycle nitrite typically goes down to near undectable levels and does not come back in most cases.
