NLS Question...

New Life Spectrum hasn't been readily available in the UK for very long and I don't know a huge deal about it except that it has a very goo reputation in the States.

I'm thinking of switching over to NLS but I do have a concern over the fact that all of their products contain garlic - which I understand is detrimental long term.

So my question is, for those who use NLS foods, is there a long term issue with the garlic content in your experience?

Thanks in advance.

I am curious where you heard it was detrimental long term.

The studies seem to indicate that it has not been proven to be beneficial as an immune system booster, or cause an increase in appetite but I have not heard of it being detrimental.

Terrestrial plant oils cause heart and liver lesions in marine fish. It's well documented in all sorts of studies. Garlic is a terrestrial plant oil.

But I am unsure of the levels of garlic which would be needed to cause health issues.

IMO, "switching over" from anything you are feeding now isn't necessary. I don't believe that you can ever have too much of a variety of food when feeding a tank. If you don't want to feed NLS all the time, then don't! That's the beauty of a varied diet. NLS is awesome food, and tons of finicky eaters will eat it, almost any fish likes it. I'd definitely work it into your routine!

Thanks Kenny.

I currently make up my own food but TBH it's a bit tedious! I may try switching to NLS a couple of times a week and build up to one feed each day.

Although garlic used extensively is not good for marine fish long term because of liver damage, in the quantities that NLS uses, as a sporadic food, it should be fine. I use it a couple of times per week as one of my feedings. As an appetite stimulant with difficult fish during the acclimation process, it may be useful, although I prefer Nutramar Ova in those circumstances.

I've yet to make my own food, as it does seem like it would be a bit tedious, but tedious vs. Expense is something I've been weighing a lot recently lol. Always good to save when you can! Rods isnt cheap!
