No liquids on planes, impact on SPS folks?

Do any of you know the impact to the SPS community because of these idiots planning to kill innocent people in the name of their god?

It only effects carry-ons. I do not beleive it effects checked luggage. All corals shipped are stowed down below.. So, I think it would only effect people who try to carry on corals...

IBTL :lol2: a little religous there...

"most" live shipping would be in cargo specific planes such as the fleet FedEx uses. Unless the terrorist want to take out a flight crew and a bunch of mail... I see no problems :D

correct it only applies to carry-on luggage. The standard shipping is not affected right now. Also, if you bought a couple of frags at an LFS or reefer, you can also put them very carefully packed in checked luggage. Happy reef'in.

Emphasize the carefully packed in your checked luggage. Our TSA screeners try to be very careful with fragile items, but often are unable to repack the bags the same as they were before opening.

RAYS,

Thanks for helping to keep the skys a little safer. I know you guys (and Girls) catch a ton of flack when dealing with people Who have forgot why you are there. Believe me, I can relate to this since I was doing security as well as checking in pax/baggage/cargo for the airline prior to 9/11 and after until the TSA took that little hassle from the airlines hands :)

I think Charles is referring to carry on thermos trading, which is pretty big. It will highly effect conferences like MACNA, IMAC, WMC, etc. hundreds leave those events with frags, and need to get on the plane.

Thanks guys. Gresham that was what I was primarily interested in but as the news of the day has progresses there is no doubt - zero tolerance by TSA. Not even for us SPS snobs. :D

Plan ahead boys and girls, it would absolutely suck to have to throw a pink lemonade in a bag with pink lemonade.

Unfortunately, that won't be an option. I've done the same thing, last March I was in Chicago and bought a whole bunch of frags from Reefdweller. I then went directly to O'Hare with my carryon
and "voila". It really is sad to see these changes, but it's got to be done.

Would a thermos in my checkin be fine? or would you guys recommend wrapping a towel around it for more cushion.

there has also been discussion that packing frags in wet newspaper might be a better way to ship anyway. I guess they would let that on the plane?

Does anyone really think this is going to stop any terrorist attacks? Because I certainly dont.

I brought back everything from Seahorses to sps frags to LPS,etc the last time I went to a conference. I'm not sure I'll go to anymore if I can't bring stuff back.

IMO, no, it won't but at least they are trying. Better than nothing I guess;)

I think profiling should help somewhat. Wait, that is not pc.

Seriously, if a bunch of old people are trying to blow up a plane, I would profile them too. Has nothing to do with race or being racist.:mixed:

I'm curious about this too, Eric Borneman talked about this in one of his articles and I have heard of some public aquariums that do the same thing with Acros.

Can any of the people that work for TSA answer this?

Also what are the regulations for overseas transport? I might want to pick up some frags while I'm in Europe next month and bring them back to California. Is there any issue with that?

When you get into overseas transport that becomes a no-no due to CITES regulations. So unless you have a license you would not be able to transport live coral into the U.S. Im not sure if the security officials would know about it but I wouldnt risk it personally.

I'm waiting for a terrorist to use C4 suppositories, then everyone flying gets full body cavity searches.... DEEP AND MEAN! :D

Yeah, exactly. If someone wants to get explosives onto a plane, theyre going to.

That being said, the day they start searching my anus is the day I stop flying.

I just finished this thread. So the concensus is no bagged livestock with saltwater in carryons. Only way to transport on commercial flight is by checking it in? Just want to be certain since I'm leaving for Oakland next weekend and bringing back some frags. Any phone number or website I can check to be certain?

Call the individual airport where you're leaving and ask their policies, but i think the no liquids is pretty much a sweeping rule across the board for every US airport. And I doubt they'll change the rules within a week. I would say it should be no problem in your checked luggage because the flight from Oakland to LA isn't that long, but I dunno if you have to get there 2 hours ahead of time ontop of that? Yikes.

Call the airport (or your airline specifically) and find out the rules.
