No liquids on planes, impact on SPS folks?

Well maybe you should try the dry shipping method then. I don't see how that would be a problem, but I guess check into it

Call the individual airport where you're leaving and ask their policies, but i think the no liquids is pretty much a sweeping rule across the board for every US airport. And I doubt they'll change the rules within a week. I would say it should be no problem in your checked luggage because the flight from Oakland to LA isn't that long, but I dunno if you have to get there 2 hours ahead of time ontop of that? Yikes.

Call the airport (or your airline specifically) and find out the rules.

The TSA ban is sweeping, all states will have to abid by it. 10 - 1 all of the EU will be doing this as well, and Asia. If they want to come into the US, they'll have to conform to the TSA policy.

Sorry, no hobbyist frags from EU, you'd need a US F&W import licence, get CITES docs for it, clear it with customs and find a known shipper to send it to you. Anything less is smuggling.

They sell bottled water right before the area where the planes take off at least I was told that in the orlando airport. So I would do is take a baggy of salt, buy a few bottled waters, mix it up good and then drop the frag into it. Right before you go through the scan point, place the frag in a wet towel.

IMO, the best way might just be ship the stuff and when you get home, it will be there the next day :)

Can any of the people that work for TSA answer this?

The ban on liquids only applies to carryons. At this time you may still bring all the liquid you want in check-in, including wet wrapped frags. Thermos? Just cushion it well. Overseas frags would be a Customs issue, not TSA. I would not check with airlines for permission to put frags in check-in. Even before the liquid ban they were telling reefers no, because they wanted extra revenue for special shipping. HTH.

I was going to go to Hawaii and bring some live fish back. At least United Air allows live aquatic carry ons but thanks to the terrorists I think Im out of luck. Checked luggages carries certain risks. Temperature in the plane's cargo bay is alot colder than the cabin. Also checked luggage can be sitting outside in the loading dock out in the hot sun while being loaded to the plane

Think I'll be safe with using a small ice chest/cooler with for checkin? I have an evening flight from Oakland to Los Angeles. So the frags won't be sitting out in the hot sun but might get pretty cold in the hold. I'll double bag, wrap with newspaper and use peanuts. Anything else I can do?

If there is any water in the bags, they won't be permitted.

Tape an icepack to the top of the color. It will be fine.

As a checkpoint supervisor(jmho) the ice pack would be questionable. Again just my opinion.

Think you misunderstood my post. I would checkin the ice chest, not carry it on. I wanted to get opinions on the packaging and if there is anything I missed.

I thought he meant checking it onto the plane. A cooler would easily keep it cool without an icepack.

IMHO, it would be cheaper to just ship em. The loss of a frag or two would equal the cost of just overnighting it to your house.

Don't think I'll need an icepack since my flight is not til 9ish so it will be evening when I show up at the air port. Also, Oakland tends to stay pretty cool in the summer. If anything I'm more concerned about it being too cold in the airplane hold.

You can always stick a heat pack in there. It doesn't get too hot and will keep the temperature fairly well. It's going to take a many of hours to drop the temp bad enough to cause issues I would think for an evening flight.

These are all free frags and a clam from a buddy of mine. Also, won't the shorter transport time compared to overnight shipping improve the chances of the clam surviving? I'm assuming 3hrs wait, 1 hr flight, 1 hr home and start acclimating. 5-6 hrs from tank to tank vs 16 hrs with overnight shipping.

Gonna bring duct tape with me to tape the cooler shut after inspection. Anything else I need to think of or have missed?

Great, I sure hope so. Been looking forward to getting the clam. I'll update this thread with my experiences after my trip. Hopefully it goes well and bodes well for future exchanges.

Get to the airport early and ask first. I've heard of people not able to board or they have to leave the package behind. I wouldn't think it would be an issue though and the faster the time the better.
