No need for a protein skimmer?

On a side note seems this question about skimming is all over the place. Small tanks that are set up for soft corals and LPS do not have the same water quality needs as a SPS dominate tank per say and thrive in dirty water. SPS on the other hand do not thrive in that same dirty water and a skimmer is vital in maintaining good water quality or some other means of cleaning the water up to a higher standard is needed. This can be done most effectively with skimming IMO.

Good point bill. there are type of Marine life that also thrive and do best in nutrient defficient water..which is easier to keep clean.

I like my skimmer and it saves me a ton of extra work on my 180, like Wayne stated.
DO you have to have one, no. It depends on the work you want to put in.

Eventually I'd like a massive Octopus or high end skimmer that is so big it' won't fit under my stand. But...that's down the road.

I have read all the posts and I will keep it simple. My tank will ALWAYS have a protein skimmer and a filter sock. I am not into debating if you should or shouldnt that is up to you. I think if a person was looking at a tank with these items and another tank without these items the better tank (overall health and apperance) would be the tank with them. I would say a person could keep a tank looking as nice without the equipment I have mentioned but, I don't believe the overall health would be the same. In the end it is up to the person and how much work they want to do.
