No room for a fudge in sump maybe a HOB

Itchy fishy

I picked up my setup from someone getting out of the hobby. Tank and sump is drilled. Herbie overflow, how he set it up their is no room for a seperate area for a refugium. It's just a 29 gal drilled, no barrels no nothing. This is my first sump so not really complaining but I like the idea of one. Has anyone tried/have the hang on back ones? Any input good/bad indifferent. Tank is a rimless 65 gal.

If the whole point of the refugium is for nutrient uptake/removal then you need quite a bit of space for one of these to really be effective. Your just spinning your wheels with a HOB refugium IMO. An efficient skimmer would be a much better option. If pods are what your after the HOB will suffice, but if you don't have any specialized feeders such as a mandarin in your tank then you might as well just rely on the population in the DT to find a happy medium so to say. KISS, GL.

I run a CPR HOB refugium on my 46g reef. In retrospect I would have drilled the tank and set it up like my 110g. However, my HOB fuge works quite well and keeps my pods safe and stores plenty of chaeto. I allowed my tank to run for over a year adding new pods weekly before I added my mandarin. Overall I am very happy with my HOB set up.
