I can't remember who it was but I remember reading a thread from a reefer on RC who had a jaw dropping heavily stocked SPS tank and apparently didn't do water changes!
The reason was that the changes threw his mag, alk and calcium out of wack so he relied on a well tuned calcium reactor and a good skimmer.
I can't see how this can be possible long term. IIRC from various experiences I've read in threads, SPS use up trace elements that can't currently be tested with regular hobby kits so water changes or balling is the only way.
