Noisy 6100...still under warentee

Hi,

I am new to Tunzes...bought a TS-24 setup this weekend from a freind that was forced out of the hobby. He purchased the setup new 10/29/03 so it is all still under warentee. I got it all setup in my tank last night (tank is a 100 gallon - 6' long). One of the 6100s is loud. Gets louder as the flow/power increases. I did not notice this in my freinds tank but to be honest can not be certain. Anything I should look at to quiet it down? Do I have to send it in to have it fixed?

Any suggestions/opinions are appreciated. The other 6100 is perfect can not be heard at all. I am also using the Tunzerocks for both powerheads. I have checked, the noisy Tunze's pump is not resting on a rock that could be causing vibrations for the noise either.

Thanks,
Scott

If it needs service it has to be sent in but odds are it is a simple problem. In sitting dry likely debris such as algae or calcium solidified inside the pump, you should completely dissassemble the pump and clean all parts. The other thing is air in the drive unit, reinstall this under water to eliminate that problem. Any parts that are loose or not properly fitted could cause this problem as well.

HI Roger,

Update on my noisy 6100.

I disassembled it fully today and cleaned everything. I rehooked it up and it still makes the noise....like a rumble. Found something new though - it only makes the noise when hooked to the multicontroller (7094). When run without the controller it is quiet.

Any ideas? I have the multicontroller set to how they show it in the book (the setup with the pumps hooked to 8 and 10).

Let me know - Scott

Is it only at low speed? At low speed they can make more noise than at high speed. Beyond that the only way for me to solve this is to get at least one of the pumps and the controller back.

Hi Roger,

It makes a lower volume hum at low speed then it gets higher pitch when the speed increases.

How long does it typically take if we need to send these two you for turn around?....I am located in Michigan....I can overnight them.....just do not want to go too long without it since the tank is now an SPS tank.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Roger,

How do you recommend setting the multicontroller for a 100 gallon tank with SPS. I am wondering if the reason I am noticing the noise more so is because I think both pumps slow down and speed up at the same time....two pumps each making a low noise makes it more noticeable. Is this the typical way the Tunze multicontroller works? I guess I just am having trouble knowing which knob does what on the 7094.

Right now it is set like the diagram shows on page 22 of the 7094 instruction book. I have the two 6100 hooked into 8 and 10. I did 8 and 11 but was unsure how this changed the flow. I am having trouble seeing the changes I make on the multicontroller because there is so much flow in the tank.

I am fairly happy with the flow in the tank just was wondering if there was a way for me to set the multicontroller so that when one pump is on high the other is on low. I think this will make the hum a little more tolerable. I think I am going to hold on sending them in until I see another freind's Tunze setup and pay more attention to the noise they are emitting.

Thanks,
Scott

I would use Tide mode so only one runs at a time. They do make a slight droaning noise in speeding up and slowing down but you really shouldn't hear it much beyond a foot past the aquarium. Of coarse these judgements are hard to make because I don't hear very well. I'm not deaf but between being a swimmer and liking guns and heavy machinery I have dulled hearing. I am reminded of a story from another destributor that sold a filter to an audiologist and the guy said it was unbelievably loud, neither of us could hear anything from it. I am not criticizing you just pointing out that these things are very hard to diagnose and repair for that reason.

8 and 11 is what you use to activate interval function and then you can use tide mode and at the set interval the pumps will switch which one is on.

To do a setting where one is on high and the other is on low just keep it as you have it- 8 and 10 and set the top going across at 30% and 100% and the bottom at 100% and 30%

Hi Roger -

I appreciate all your help so far. Quick/dumb question, when you have the pumps set on interval (on completely on while the other is completely off) how much of a concern is it that a fish will swim into the pump that is off? I ask because I am using the Tunzerocks on both pumps and have two very curious small fish....a cleaner wrasse and a neon pseudochromis. Also by having it on intervals, is this any harder on the pumps...I know they are continuous use pumps.

Thanks,
Scott

The Electronic pumps shouldn't have any problem because the electronics control start up and ensure the pump only spins one way. If you have the new driver (blue box) it has model number 7240.27 the driver has a program which turns the pump once every 20 second to scare the fish away. Otherwise, yes it would be a risk.
