Noob mistake

i thought I was done with these.

I still run a canister on my 40g

I did a wc Friday. Forgot to plug in the canister but it had water in it. I had reconnected the hose. Without thinking I just plugged it in and now I'm getting a surfer smell. Id say it's 1 gallon of about 40 total gallons as I have a hob fuge that is about 3.5 gallons.

Anyways what to do now? The water is already mixed so not sure it makes sense to unplug the canister.

The canister has ceramic rings, eheim media balls, clear floss, sponge, and chemipure - which was new Friday.

Just mixed a batch of water. Gonna do a wc in after its nice and mixed.

Anything else I need/should do? I also have prime on hand if that could help.

Just have two maroon clowns and crabs and snails - no corals yet. Just getting ready for them.

Also have a skimmer running - 40 #s rock and 60 #s sand. All other Powerheads have been running.

For now I added a capful of prime (rated for 50g) per advice of the lfs. I am mixing 10 gallons of water. Anyone have any advice? Also I've been dosing 15 ml of part 1 and part 2 along with 60 ml of mag trying to get ready for corals - levels are 7.5 alk, 410 calcium, and 1320 mag. Should I continue to do that or hold off? I do 3 rounds of dosing per day. Only done one so far.

What sort of corals are you thinking of adding just out of curiosity?
And how is the situation now?

I want to start with a RBTA. So not really a coral and then go from there. Tank has been running almost a year now. I want easy corals with some color. Open to suggestions. Fish and hovering in their same spots. My little maroon sometimes lays on the sand bed. That makes me nervous but he does it all the time. I don't see any signs of heavy breathing. They react to my finger running across the outside. Had to take the wife out for an errand. Then have to decide if I should do a wc or not. I don't want to overreact. But also want to do the best I can for the fish.

Maybe run carbon?

They're cheaper than polypads if you don't need to know what the contaminant is, but I think it's the same idea. Also might not hurt to crank up your surface agitation. I think the hydrogen sulfide is a gas so that might help it clear out faster.

Ive done this a few times with my tlf phos reactor never had probs or any affect on any of my corals or fish. As for the smell it will go away in a day.

Great thank you both. The fish have acted pretty much the same. I have water ready to go if I see something abnormal.

I do have carbon in my filter - a pad and chemipure and tons of surface movement.

I have done stuff like that. Should not be an issue. Run some carbon may help with the smell but it should go away. If it gives you some peace of mind you could do another WC. Good luck just my 2 cents.
