noobe led questions

I am currently planning my new tank, I have been on hiatus for the last 8 years. I reacently obtained a trapezoid shaped tank that is 96" long 30" deep about 250 gallons. I was wondering what leds would do best to keep sps and what color spectrum to look for growth and viewing and what opticsI may need. I would like to mimic sun set and rise and lunar phases.

Here's what I am thinking. 4 lumia 5.1 or 5.2 I don't know 20. 30W in the 450nm range 15-20 30W white and 10 30W in the 400nm range any thoughts or ideas

There are many good DIY LED threads on RC. Spend some time doing research before you start buying components. Several good threads devoted to the Lumia chips 5.2's being better IMO. Recently several have begun doing DIY's using the Radion upgrade Pucks available on the Echotech website (good value but requires a decent amount of DIY skill)

The "evil cluster" is another popular configuration for larger tanks, as is including some T5 supplement.

You'll probably want optics around 60 degree for a tank that deep. The Blue end of the spectrum 410nm to 480nm is the growth spectrum so you want to be heavy there and only provide enough other colors of light to achieve pleasing viewing (T5 is an easy way to do that)

Read up for a while then start asking more specific questions as you get your ideas narrowed down. Otherwise you'll just get a ton of opinions and there are a ton of different ways to do LED lighting that will achieve good results, so it is really up to you to narrow it down.

Thank you for you reply, I have been searching RC and other sites just can't seem to find much info for a tank of my depth.

What's the full dimensions of you tank? You give length and depth what is the width? You mention trapezoid shape.

Just for fun:

Close the front is 96" the sides are 42" and the back is 24" the whole thing is 30" wide and deep, kinda looks like a triangle tank with the point cut off.

cdenunzio83, thanks your tank looks great. Do you think 3w Leds with 60 degree lenses would be sufficient to reach 30" deep?
