not drilled filtration

i am starting up a 67 gallon (to be reef tank) and am not sure about my filtration choices. i am going to be using a remora pro for my skimming needs. the live rock provides the biological filtration so who provides the majority of the mechanical or chemical filtration? i have an eheim and rena canister kicking around on my fw tanks but i have heard that they are not useful in sw setups because to their ability to build up nitrates. i dont see much use for an ac500. anyone care to chime in?

... equipment so far.

With proper skimming and sufficient LR and live sand you should be ok. Provide adequate flow at the surface for air/gas exchange and you can use a canister or power filter to run just carbon if you feel it is necessary.

Definitely avoid the canister filter. I'd run an aquaclear so you have a place to put carbon or other media (rowphos, polyfilter, etc.). I use chemipure or purigen in a HOB filter on all of my tanks to help polish the water and for additional flow.

Canister filters are Ok without bio-media. However they need to be cleaned often; otherwise they will accumulate detrius. So, for water polishing or emergency removal of toxins they are ok.

True, but if you use an HOB without the sponge you don't need to clean the filter every week. I guess I'm just lazy. ;)
