maybe i got a shy smithii. but the only time i ever see him is when he wants a feed, after that he shuts his door and stays hidden. he sometimes sit looking out his door but usually he does nothing other than that.

I thought smithiis were really active and interactive? this guy doesnt event want to leave his hole.

How long have you had him? If you just got him recently he might just feel a little insecure of his new home and once he decides this new home is pretty safe he might come out more. You could be right about just having a shy mantis though, I think Smithiis being active is more of a generalization than an absolute rule.

If you read the adventures with Tim it seems like he has the same problem with his at times. Reading through his posts what he does is rearrange the tank a little bit to make it a little more viewer friendly, you might try that?

hes been in his tank for well over a month, hes already had a moult from what i know as he locked up for a week or two. he only came out in complete view once. the most he will do now is take a peek out his hole now and then. Im wondering if a peacock is more active than this dude, I may get a peacock if they come out in the open alot.

Where did you get your smithi? I was looking all over for one and I ended up having to settle on an O. scyllarus.

Don't tell me you have this guy in a 12gal tank? I hope you are planning on a bigger tank soon!

i would trade but unfortunately im in aus and importing live animals in prohibited, and exporting is as well. it wouldnt survive the trip :(

i will have a 29gal ready for a peacock when ive transferred all my fish to the new tank. it should be enough for a peacock.

I'm setting up a larger 29 gallon TruVu since I originally intended to keep a smithii. But the LFS happened to have couple O.S. and I picked up the smallest one so it should be ok for a little bit.

Twitch is the same...ive had him for 4 or 5 months and he comes out to feed and to roam the tank, but as soon as he sees that he is being watched he goes into his little cave system and peaks out of one of 7 holes to watch you
