November Meeting - Saturday 19th @ Stamford

Hi group. It is my turn again to host. Saturday November 19th - Stamford, CT.

I've just restarted my system, so there will not be much to see in terms of corals, but I promise to show you plenty of DIY electronics.

As far as topics go, if people are interested, we will build and test an LED driver from scratch.

500 Bedford Str
Stamford, CT

2-4pm (tell your other half it is 2-6 :) )

Test LED? How about one that could drive an ATO? I can tell you all about those. ;)

Be there or be square! See ya' there. :)

No problem. I have one of those as well. Can show you how a $9 arduino with $2 relay can be the super failsafe ATO anyone has always wanted. Just add few float switches and a pump.

Nope. I don't know squat about drivers. What I can PROVE is how many lumens of Cree Cool Whites you need per square inch of screen to grow hair algae in abundence. That might be suitable as the basis of an interesting conversation anyway. :)

Actually -- that is a good topic. ATO. I am very frustrated with my current method. Id be interested in your idea there too (super fail-safe sounds good to me -- that is why Ive never gone the float switch route..Too many horror stories in the community) Id like to see your idea up close.

You know those silly plastic screens everyone uses for ATO's? Apparently they are fairly common in other places in the county. But I was hard pressed to find any around here - had to order them (in quantity).

Anyway, I've got 10 more than I need. They are 13.5" by 10.5" and will bring them for anyone that needs one. Host first, members 2nd, visitors next. But given the typical size of our meetings, I'll likely be taking 2 or 3 home. :)

Should be plenty to go around.

Steve, you have me at a loss: plastic screen for auto top off???
what is that? I dont use one and have no clue...apologize for my ignorance -- can you send a picture for what its used for?

I think he refers to the float switch splash/snail guard, right Steve?

It is a small plastic vial you drill holes into and place your float switch in to prevent snails and/or waves from giving you false triggers.

I used my Salifert Ammonia test vial for that :-)

Sorry!

I meant ATS, not ATO! Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah... I'm talking about the screens everyone grows macro algae on.

HAHAHA.
Okay, Im not so ignorant as I thought earlier. Tho, then again I am in the low-tech camp as Im still not using any float switches (dont trust them after all the tank crash horror stories Ive heard caused by their failure) That is why Im so curious to go to our next meeting and see what Georgi has in store... that has redundency, is simple and close to fail-safe??? sounds like I maybecome a convert and buy some float switches--

what is next...a controller???

Ah, ATS screens... That's different :). Michaels (10 min walk from my place) has them at 49c each :). I hope you didn't spend too much on them. They even have two different types, one is with much finer holes than the "standard" screen everyone uses:

I'm thinking of trying the finer one as it feels like it will have more surface area after I do the "treatment" with the hole saw.

10 minutes from your place? Wow! You have no idea how much time I wasted these things. Monetary investment - low. Time investment - stupid high.

I'll still bring my extras. Just to save people the trouble. ;)

I have a couple of digi frags if anyone would like some. They grow so fast in my tank. They are purplish in color (originally given to me by Obidad). I was cleaning my tank and broke off a few pieces. Let me know if you're interested and I'll bring some to the meeting.
