NSW Run

I got to start getting water to fill my tank . I have been running fresh water in my system to help cure out my DIY rock . I want to start putting NSW in the tank to finish curing the rock . I would like to put something live in the tank before the January 12 th. meeting . Ted

Ted,

How far offshore / how deep do you run to get your water?

Do you do anything to it other than maybe run it through a filter sock before adding it to the tank?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim , I run about 12 miles off shore . I drop my pump down about 6' below the surface . I don't do anything to the water , but check the SG , calcium ,ph , and temp , before I put it in the tank . Ted

Ted,

I feel your pain. I am past due to go out and get some water - am now on two weeks without a water change. Seems like the few days when the weather cooperates to get out something else comes up (like today). Wish we were closer - could combine efforts and save some cost. And then when the weather is ok and schedule allows, the tides are all wrong. If I can't get out sometime this week, looks like I will be making a trip to FAOIS to get some salt mix.

I need to make another Gulf water run . I wish this weather would work with me . Ted

Ted I'm always willing to help. Let see what my schedule this week is and I'll help. I'll call you

Ted,

I finally got out yesterday afternoon to get some water. Although the wind had died down, definitely was not a day for the queezy to be out (2-4' swells with no clear direction - was "fun" being 5 miles offshore in a 16' boat!).

Had not tested the Gulf water in awhile so thought I would this morning while waiting for the heaters to get the temp up. Ca at 400, Mg at 1350, Alk at 3.4 and salinity at 38ppt. Would have thought with all the rain lately the salinity would be low, not high.

So will mix some ro/di water in with the NSW to get the salinity down.

Ted,

With all the winds / wave action over the last few days, wouldn't that have mixed up the water pretty good? Or is there still a marked salinity difference as you go up/down the water column? Where I got the water it was 20'-25' deep.

This is interesting - this summer when we are diving I might take a water sample from the bottom and see how it compares to the surface. My diving buddies will add one more item to my crazy behavior list.

You make a very good point , but I still think there would be a difference . JMO But I'm no expert . How deep would the fresh water layer be . I think you would need some very deep wave action to push the lighter water layer down very far . Ted
