Nudibranchs - How can this be possible?

I had a 55 gallon tank up for about 6 years. My24 gallon has been up about 3 years and I had a 10 gallon going as a refugium/quarantine that stayed up probably about 4 years.

About 3 years ago, I got some nudibranchs in on a Montipora in the 55 gallon that killed every Montipora in that tank. I've not tried to keep any SPS in that tank since. All other corals have been extremely healthy.

I recently broke down the 55 and put a couple corals I wanted to keep into the 24 gallon: all LPS or zoanthids - no SPS of any kind.
I haven't added any SPS to my 24 gal for at least a year.

All of a sudden ... it seems like around the time I put rock and corals from the breakdowns of the 10 and 55 gal tanks, my big, healthy Spongodes started turning white!

I pulled it out today to try and cut off the RTN and save the healthy bits and was blown away to see that the poor thing is covered in big white nudibranchs! There were so many egg sacs over the saved pieces that I gave up trying to frag it.

Where did they come from ?!?!?

Can SPS eating nudibranchs survive in a tank without SPS for 3 years? Or even a year for that matter? If the same kind of nudibranch eats zoanthids and SPS, then why were all my zoanthids so healthy in that tank?

They came in on something because I've had Montipora and Spongodes doing beautifully in the 24 until I started breaking down and shifting stuff in from the other 2 tanks.

Oh well ... now that I know what I'm up against, I'll start dipping the surviving piece of Spongodes. But I'm still wondering how this can be possible?

i dont think so because that is what they eat, i had then awhile ago and took all montis out for 6 mnths and havent had a problem since even though you may not have added any sps have you added any corals or rock ?
