I've always just grabbed from the base and ripped them off the rock with tweezers. As long as you work underwater and don't handle the stressed palys with your skin, you will be safe. Do not do this with broken skin. Palytoxin and the other nasties those polyps contain are no joke.
Also - Kenya Tree coral has stronger chems than brown proto-palys and will kill them back if they remain in contact. KTC is much easier to manage/remove and there is always someone giving it away.
