Nitrates and Phosphates are the nutrients that cause algae. If you have any detectable amounts, you could have an algae problem. If you don't have detectable levels and you have a lot of algae, the algae is probably using up all the nutrients so they don't come up on a water test.... they are still there though (just used up in the form of algae)
