O.briareus photos and video

Very nice! I love his (her?) colors.

It's a boy!

Here's another video

I'm 99.99% sure he will not bite. The fact there has not been a recorded bite with this relatively common species, the fact he didn't bite my hand when it smelled like shrimp and he crawled over it to get to the shrimp and now this :

Originally I was planning on feeding him tonight since he now does come out during the day with coaxing but I was vacuuming and he came out to see what all the commotion was so I got out the camera and took some videos. I also noticed I still have a ton of crabs in my fiddler tank, which I rarely if ever feed.

First I got this video of him swimming around.

Then I decided to see what would happen if I put my hand in without food. After a few seconds he came over to explore pulled me a bit let me touch him as well and did not show any signs of aggression. I was pretty sure he was hungry as it had been a day and a half since he ate.

After the video I went and grabbed one of my crabs, put him in a jar and put him in. I didn't think it would go by this fast but the 42 second video came out great!

I will lookout for a jar with a lid this weekend. I'll also try to wait until sunday night to feed him again, Since the crab was a lot smaller then his usual meal of large shrimp he may even come out tonight for a feeding.

Very nice pictures. Thanks!
I just got my first oct about a week ago, and I might see him once a night. Hopefully mine comes around like yours did.

New videos. I have been experimenting with giving him food in plastic containers. The kind toys come out of vending machines.

Most of the time he can open them. Usually it takes a minute. Sometimes he either can't or wont. In the first video he gets it no problem but in the second he attempts to pull the crab out through the tiny holes. He gets most of its legs but that's it. Of course later it is opened.

Finally a video I shot yesterday which came out nice.

That's so cool man. I like the way he attacked the jar. does he come out lots during the day?

More and more. Pretty much everyday these days. If he's hungry or wants to play he will be out. Spends a lot of time sleeping too, but now he doesn't really sleep in secrecy. I can usually spot him at almost all times.

For a Briareus I believe a 75 is the recommend size, I have mine in a custom 90.

They aren't super super active as far as swimming around, but fully stretched out mine is about 30" arm to arm, and they do need several different places to hang out. They aren't particularly sensitive to water quality but need to be acclimated slowly.

Some new photos, well I took them a week ago but never got around to posting.
All without flash for a change.

When he grabs your fingers like that what does it feel like? I seen a thing on tv about this one octo that had teeth like claws in it's suction cups.

Feels like suction cups. It can get very sticky. I was scared at first, but now that I know he won't bite me or at least 99.9% sure he won't I'm not as worried.

He felt about how I'd expect but I had no idea he would be this strong.

He dosent seem to be aggressive with you. He moves fast when it comes to food but seems gentle when he was holding your fingers. I have heard they are really strong. Do you know of other species that can be kept in a aquarium? I mean a sensible size aquarium.

There are tons of species that can be kept in modest sized aquariums. The big problem is if you order one you never know what you're going to get.

I haven't posted in a while, mostly due to being busy and or sick.

Only thing new is he lost the tip of one of his arms to a powerhead. No big deal. It's regenerating.

I have still been taking tons of photos and videos, now I"ll try and get around to sorting through them and posting some good ones. It's now been almost 7 months since I got him.

One cool thing that has happened is he finally let me pick him up completely (still in the water) Usually he will keep a couple arms on the glass or rock so he can not be pulled too far but he crawled right on to my hand the other day.
