O.k. Mantis Volume ?

I'm excited about my 12 gal. nanocube dx . Just ordered the tank and stand for my future mantis buddy . So now the ? It's going to be in my bedroom how active will a smasher be at night time and should I be concerned . I live with my 2 brothers and my mother it's my brothers house. Do any reefers out there have one in their bedroom and do you hear any bumps in the night ? I have very little space to put it anywhere else other than my room and I don't mind having a great view of my little piece of the ocean in my room . The mantis won't be bought until my tank is cycled so I got time yet . Though I am prepared for the noise when the critter comes home . I've read the lurkers guide to mantis shrimp and read all I can yet could'nt find any post with this ? so I figured I'd ask . So there ya go . :beer:

You won't have any problems.

I have a 37 reef tank with a pistol shrimp, a 6g with a smithii, and a 15g with a peacock. They don't make a ton of noise. I would say the mantis in my reef tank makes the most noise.

ive had a couple nights when my wennerae in my 5 in my room has woken me, but otherwise, you dont hear much... just when they are remodeling! My peacock has woken my a few times to from through a closed door and sleeping...

My tern wakes me up every day pounding on the tank, looking at me. Usually7 3 or 4 whacks. Loud ones. The others pound here or there, but the tern whacks all day long. If she wasnt my favorite, Id...

Anyway, they are all (8 of them...) in my bedroom as well.

Thanks folks for your input I appreciate your responses .I went to the LFS yesterday to look into seeing if he could order a mantis when the tank is ready so he showed me his list . Ya know the vendors really need to do a better job of specifing the types . On the list there were only 2 choices . 1. Colored or 2. Ordinary . I have 5 LFS shops in my town to look at and if this is what I have to look forward too I may need to order it online . Anyways thanks for all your replies . :beer:

You will probably have just SLIGHTLY better luck ordering online. TBS knows what they got, live aquaria do a prety go job IDing, and there are a couple "specialty" sites that may take the time to properly ID a specimen... PLUS until Dr Roy's List, it was very difficult to ID anything other than a peacock, or ciliata...

Almost all gonodactylids are diurnal. Those that live in cavities usually open around dawn and actively forage into the morning. Many reduce activity in the middle of the day and show another burst of activity in the late afternoon. In the field, they close by sunset. However, when kept in aquaria in rooms that do not have a fixed lighting schedule, this schedule can break down althought they typically will still be inactive after lights out.

There are exceptions. O. scyllarus frequently is active during the night and Echinosquilla's feeding activity is primarily crepuscular extending a few hours into the night.
