you can bring anything you want out of hawaii if it was collected legally.
And you CAN bring live fish out of Hawaii - my friend brought a box of fish home about 6 months ago, and i did as well 2 or 3 three years ago. You have to let the airlines know and possibly show them the fish is alive to prove it is actually saltwater and not another liquid.
Just call ahead of time to be certain and take down names and positions of people who you talked to. Name dropping is always good!
