Occ or Perc?

"Rkelman's avatar is a clownfish with an anemone afro! LOL! Did you take that picture Rkelman?"

Yes I did. That's my felmale. She's pretty cute. Thanks Marc I think so :)

Its about 12" across I guess. Here's some more pics if your interested.

very nice pictures.
the pupil is easy to see now that the contrast of those melanistic ocellaris is a value or two away. i don't see the black of it's pupil encompassing a much greater area of the eye than those of a typical A. percula. nor do i see that in common colored specimens.
i don't know where the idea of their pupil as a defining ref. point of the two species came from. i think i read in a pet trade or hobby oriented article (prob. on the www.), something to the effect of the pupil of ocellaris having a muddy color vs. percula's blacker color with more depth. nothing about a color diff. of the surrounding iris. too many unknowns here such as how many specimens were compared to come to that conclusion. there are a number of other factors which could account for it. also as far as i know the questionable observation lacked any ref. and support of the scientific or academic community. and don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to discredit the layperson, after all one of the worlds leading entomologist miriam rothschilds has said that formal education stifles creativity. of course she had the opportunity to experience other. lol

Thanks Slakker Big Als of all places :)

"what are you talking about?"
Occelaris typically have black eyes. Percs have an orange ring around them typically. Its not a fail safe method I don't think though. I wasn't sure where to start / stop counting the spines. The only thing that made me wonder about a possible perc is the smaller one has dark coloration.

Hmmm...that's one I hadn't heard of...

IMHO, the eyes are not a good indicator of species. This is my female Ocellaris. She has small black pupils surrounded by an orange iris. I'm looking for a pic of the dorsal spines that proves she is an Ocellaris.

Great pic elegance coral. Good proof of the eye coloration not being a failsafe way to determine species.

Thanks

Here's the best pic I can find of her dorsal fin. You can't count the spines in the white band, but there are 8 in the orange, and you can see the last one extending out the back side of the white band. The missing section is to large to have only one spine. There are 11.
