ocean runner pumps

are ocean runner and octopus pumps the same now a days? I thought i had heard that someplace...

premium aquatics has the octopus water pumps (same pumps that power some of the skimmers) and they look identical to the aquamedic ocean runner pumps... but they are cheaper, and the given specs don't seem to match?

I'm looking for a return pump, and it needs to be quiet and pump around 500 or so GPH, little more or little less.. at 3.5' of head or so..

The pumps i was looking at were:
Ocean runner 2500
Ehiem 1260
Velocity PS1

They've all got pros and cons that i've weighed out... but it seems the ocean runners are really hard to find now a days, and they are also a lot more expensive then they used to be...

anyone wanna help me out?

check out bulk reef supply. great prices & usually in stock.half the price of most places. mines a 3500, around 70 bucks. most places are charging 149.99 for same pump. great customer service as well. not sure about the octo`s but brs is the place for oceanrunners

thanks for the heads up, i wasn't aware they carried pumps :rollface: .

Anyone else care to weigh in on the octopus vs ocean runner thing though..? I need to make an order from PremiumAquatics anyways, so if the octopus= the ocean runner, i might as well get that there too.

I have an OR 2500 running on my 33 cube (( and 29 when it was set up )), I have had it for 3-4 years now, and not a whole lot of issues. There was a time where it didn't want to restart, but it just needed a good cleaning. I can't speak about the Octopus pumps. The OR is pretty quiet, but if you need silence the Velocity T1 is the only way to go. I have 2 T2, and even though they are get up there in years, still can't tell that they are on, they are that quiet.

I was told the Octopus is the same pump but made in China.

Your right Jo, they do look identical. I've had an OR 2500 running externally on my DT for almost 2 years now with no issues. I do clean it about every 3-4 months. Since I as well saw that many places up their prices on that pump and they have become harder to find I picked up a spare from Bulk Reef Supply just like James mentioned.

Great price compared to everyone else!

I run a Ocean Runner 3500 as my return pump in my 90g.
It came with the tank (so really no idea how old it actually is).
I have been running it nearly a year and a half.
Not so much as a hick up. Awesome pump, No noise,
minimal power usage.
A 3 month vinegar cleaning & it keeps pumping.
Very reliable & I recommend it.
I have purchased a new one (from BFS) & it is sitting on
the shelf as a direct replacement.
Both of mine are labeled Germany.

I just bought a ocean runner 2500 pump for a return on my zoanthid tank. It is very quiet and it is exactly what I was looking for.
I am also a big fan of the Velocity/Poseidon pumps. They are so quiet you can't hardly tell if they are running.
I currently use 3 Poseidon P-4 pumps on my 240. But the Velocity/Poseidon pumps will add heat to your tank which can be controlled with a well placed fan.

I've heard great things about the velocity pumps, that's why i was looking into them.... but the fact that they are water cooled and add so much heat concerns me a bit... how much heat do you think they really add? According to Premiumaquatics they add between 4-6 degrees... if that was the case that would be wayyy to much for me during the summer time..

in the winter i wouldn't mind a bit of added heat, hell it would make it so i wouldn't have to run my heaters as much... but in the summer my tank runs about 80-81 degrees (with a window AC unit in the room) and i really don't want it much hotter than that...

The PS1/PS2 pump is 98W. That is how much heat is added to the water. All submersible pumps such as the OR, Eheim, Mag etc are also water cooled. Use the wattage numbers as a rough comparison of heat output.

haha, so you mean the Mag 9.5 i'm running currently submersed is adding the same amount of heat?

Just want to bump this about the octopus pumps again... does anyone have any experience with them?

I used a Poseidon P-4 on my 180 as a return pump. I also had 3x250 watt mh over my tank with a open back canopy.
I placed a 6" clip-on fan blowing on the P-4 on low speed and while my temps were high, 80 degrees, it never got above that.
I used that same P-4 for approx. 5 years.
If you have a little wiggle room and can cool your tank with fans the Poseidon/Velocity are the l quietest external pumps.

it is my understanding that the octopus pumps are manufactured in the same plant that aquamedic was getting the ocean runner pumps. so they should be identical. i have set up 2 tanks and used the octopus pumps, and they are dead silent good pumps. if you are looking for a pump at roughly 500gph get the one rated at 750, it should work just fine. also make sure you are getting the turbine pumps, and not the skimmer pump. they use different impellers.

yeah, that's the one i was looking at...

if they are indeed the same as the ocean runner pumps, then i'm sure i'll be very happy with them...

however, if they aren't the same... then i probably would want to stay away..

they look the same, and i too have heard that they are the same.. but if they are the same pumps, then why do they have different specs? Same pump exterior, and same pump wattage's... but different GPH/LPH specs?

It's a toss up right now for me between the ocean runner, and running it internally, or the Poseidon and running it externally... only issue with the whole external thing is space in my sump... and the Poseidon pumps cost more too
