Oceanic 29 - craigslist / budget build / diy

Hey guys,

update for my cube

What happened with your temp?

My area got hit with a heatwave. I live in an apartment near the beach and always leave my windows open for that ocean breeze, my windows face the ocean and get direct afternoon sun. That day happened to be very hot. Since then, I picked up some curtains on craigslist that do a great job of keeping the light/heat out. Quite impressed with the temp of my room after the curtains.. who knew?

Moving on to the tank!

At this point, Ive lost track of how much has gone into this build.

Got a MP10QD and BRS RO/DI unit from member here on RC.com $315
Picked up an Vertex omega 130 from the SoCal store roughly $300

Not sure how much I paid for the LR I recently added, lets call it $100

the tank is stocked with
10~ Astria snails.
4~ Margarita snails
10~ hermits
1 Nassarius snail

1 potters angel - I don't usually name my fish, however this one is named 'Lucky' - as in lucky to be alive :D
1 starry blenny - added 2 weeks after the potters

look at these guys! love the pattern on the potters

Lucky casually hunts pods all day long. The starry blenny who remains to be named - casually grazes on the algae. Both are very active and look healthy. They like hanging out next to each other. The blenny will eat frozen mysis, while Lucky avoids the mysis and eats all the live pods he can.

The blenny is the master of chill.

Such a cool fish

Lucky always on the move~

Without doubt he appreciates the added flow from the MP10

These two fish are quite different from each other and interact peacefully, really fun to watch. Equally interesting how they will both be out and about and then suddenly vanish into the rocks. Here is their domain

Still have yet to buy a test kit and test the water. :) I'm letting the algae (food source) grow on the sides of the tank. I have one block of sea lab 28 in the sump doing its thing, its almost depleted.

Have held back on modding the lights/lid of the tank due to the high probability of getting a bigger tank and drilling this cube finally to be some sort of fudge / DT for mantis / seahorse.

My current filtration setup is easily good for 100g. I would be happy in the realm of 50-90g. Whatever tank I decide I'll have to get the appropriate lights for SPS.

I've enjoyed the process of building the tank and am pleased to see the finish line in sight:
*add chaeto to the fuge and set up a light with reverse photo period etc.
*set up ATO, already have the line plugged into the float sitting in the sump.

Hope you all enjoy the pics. let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Reefing!

To keep track of everything thats been going on w the build here is a quick update

Ellis Aquatics in Compton, CA has "the highest quality lowest prices" :) Great staff - glad to support their business

Lucky (potters angel) was developing some Ich, his colors were softening and I could tell that he was getting stressed. I don't have a QT and did not want to set one up, so I got 2 Cleaner Shrimp from Ellis Aquatics. They quickly got to work and cleaned both fish.

Happy to report that Lucky is Ich free and colors are much more vivid.

:D

Presently the tank is running strong, went on vacation last month and lost the fish & shrimp due to my ATO container running dry, PH/salinity swings. Uncle who was house sitting did not know how to replace the water. Lesson learned, when going on vacation make sure to print tank care instructions & fill up top off container.

Interestingly enough, the coral crab and snails survived.

Have one happy Cherub Angel now, 30gal is perfect and the new tank I'm building will be a major upgrade.

Pics soon.

Happy Reefing!
