Nope you dont need to have anything there. I got rid of my cartridge on day one and have been running it like that for the past 6 months. If you are uneasy you can put one of those filter sponges in there just to catch anything big but make sure you clean it well and often or it will become a nitrate factory. If you havent ditched the bioballs in chamber 2 you might want to think about it but take them out slowly over a month or two. You can put a filter bag with LR rubble in there Just make sure you raise your over all water level so that they remain submerged. I have a skimmer in chamber 2. That is another option.
