Wanted to share the results of a bag of ViaAqua Ocean Pure salt that I received from my wholesaler.
Just to show that I am not biased towards this salt and was mainly looking for another salt alternative to Oceanic salt due to the price increases or maybe it was cheap initially and now price is going up.
In part to keeping my operation cost down without sacrificing salt quality, I thought I visit Ocean Pure salt again to see if things have improved. So here are my test results.
Water source is RO/DI and reads 0 on my TDS meter.
Test kits are all Salifert test kits and not expired.
Amount of water used to test: ~30g
Used a Refractometer to test salt level.
Temperature: 77.8 degrees F
Specific Gravity - 1.025 (Manufacturer recommends 1.020 - 1.024)
Mg - 1320 - 1350 mg/L
ALK - 11.2 dKH
CA - 450 mg/L
PO4 - None Detected
pH** = difference drop of 0.6 between RO/DI water and mixed water
SiO2 - None Detected
Note: My pH meter decides to go on a fritz so I basically used it to determine the difference change between original and mixed water. The pH dropped a value of 0.6.
Packaging Note: The 50g bag is a zip lock type back which allows you to close the bag for almost air tight again. The problem I had with my bag was, there was a hole at the bottom. But other wise it would be great. The salt was seal in another plastic bag inside, to keep the freshness of the salt.
The salt also dissolved very easily, like Oceanic, but not as fine as Oceanic. Which I prefer as I am not big on the salt dust.
Aside from the high ALK level, which I know for many SPS keepers which is not a problem, I will be switching from Oceanic salt to OceanPure.
