Hello fellow RC members. Before getting down to the details of my tank build, i would firstly like to thank everyone on this site for making it what it is. The input and experience that can be found in the thousands of pages here are invaluable(especially to the newbie reefer like myself).
My name is Chris, from Malaysia, and i've been a 'lurker' on RC for many a month. Im 22 years old and currently pursuing a degree in Law(2nd year). I have been interested in aquatic life from my diaper wearing days(according to my family). I started off with goldfish and slowly progressed to Arowana's. It was not possible to have a marine tank when i was younger but that didnt stop me from reading books on it. Ive watched things evolve from when undergravel filters were popular. I finally took the plunge last year and got myself a 56 gallon aquarium. It wasn't long before i had a mated pair of skunk cleaners cleaning my hand everytime i put it in. The tank has been running skimmerless from its second month and 8 months on its still doing fine. I know having a skimmer is better but i wanted to have a somewhat 'dirty' set up in which tube worms and various other filter feeders could thrive. Besides one small algae bloom, the tank has had little or no problems. Mr Murphy has been kind.
The size of the aquarium doesn't allow me to keep any of the bigger fish (haven't had a Tang of Angel to date). This is why, like many of you, i have decided to go bigger. My main problem is in deciding on the tank size. Due to the size of the doorway into my room, the tank cannot be wider than 24"(depth). I'm not a fan of tanks that look too long, hence i'm leaning towards a length of 5', though i could make it 6' if i wanted to. The height is where i am undecided. Maintenance has to be easy, which would make 24" the logical choice, but adding an extra foot of height would increase the volume significantly. What would be the best solution?

Thank you Harleyguy.
Anyone got any input on my height issue? The lighting that i plan to use is a 3' ATI Powermodule(6 blub) and a Sfiligoi Infinity XR-6 250W. Was planning on going with the 400 watters but i think it would be overkill. The ATI will be over a long island with mostly softies and LPS. The MH will be over a smaller SPS dominated island.

The height issue is one among many to debate. The deeper tanks have more swimming area for the fish and more growing area for the corals, but maintaining a deep (30" or deeper) tank will be a hassle, and also require stronger lighting. Shallower tanks require less light and are easier to maintain, but offer less growth room and room to swim.
One solution you could do is only go 24" high and 36" deep (front to back) to get it threw your door simply tilt it on its side... For that matter you could go as large as you want front to back.

187 gallon [60"L X 24"W X 24"(30")T] rimless(Invincible's tank is just too sweet) Starphire aquarium. Order to be placed by the end of the month.

Stand
Custom made vented wooden stand 60"L X 25"W X 33"T.

Sump
Currently working on a few designs. Must have room for a fuge and skimmer(duh!!...sorry guys, i tend to state the obvious at times)

Filtration
LR in display and sump. Undecided on skimmer (Reeflo Orca or Deltec??) Skimmer Pros, please advise.. i have been reading every skimmer thread out there but am no closer to making my mind up.

Return
Ehime 1262 - return lines split (X2 Wavy Seas)

Circulation
Vortech wavemakers (X2)

Lighting
3' Ati Powermodule(6 bulbs) and 1 X 250W Sfiligoi Infinity XR-6 (with ACLS??)

Chiller
Artica 1/3 hp.

Controller
Biotopus 2.

Substrate
Undecided

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I thought of that too Harleyguy..the tank itself would make it through the door but the stand wouldn't. My folks wouldn't be too happy with the idea of breaking down the door just to get the tank in.

Well... i have decided on the Reeflo Orca 200 as my skimmer. Next up is deciding whether the Sfiligoi lights are worth the money.

Slight change of plans. I'm going to be conpleting my final year in London, therefore i dont want to get too big a tank...yet. I'm going with a 120G, 48" x 24" x 24" braceless starphire tank a slightly off center overflow. The return will be split, with a wavy sea on one outlet and a spraybar on the other. The rest of the flow will be provided by 1 Tunze Wavebox and one Vortech. Lighting will consist of a 6 bulb 36" ATI Powermodul (which i received 2 days ago).

Well, i placed my order for the tank and stand yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my LFS had started bringing in Vortechs about a week ago which means i won't have to waste a ton of cash ordering it online.

Progress as of today:

Tank
120 gallon [48"L X 24"W X 24"T] rimless(Invincible's tank is just too sweet) Starphire aquarium.

Stand
Custom made vented wooden stand 48"L X 25"W X 36"T.

Sump
30"L X 20"W X 22"T Custom arcrylic sump with room for a skimmer, DSB, bethnic zone, and macroalgae growout/LR rubble fuge. (and return pump of course)

Filtration
LR in display and sump. Refugium. DSB. Bethnic zone (effectiveness of this is debatable but it can't hurt...right??)

Return
Ehime 1262 - return lines split (X2 Wavy Seas)

Circulation
Vortech wavemakers (X2)

Lighting
3' Ati Powermodule(6 bulbs)

Chiller
Artica 1/3 hp. Not required at the moment as the tank will be situated in my room(where my current tank is) which is air conditioned. Current tank temperatures are always between 26 and 28 celcius.

Controller
Profilux controller (with everything). This will be purchased after the tank is set up as i want it to be as automated as possible.

Substrate
Carib Sea's Arag Alive.

Stocking List

Stocking List

Due to the fact that my aim is to create a mixed reef with a few choice sps', the flow and lighting are on the relatively low end of the scale(though many people are successfully keeping SPS only tanks with T5's only). As for fish, i plan to keep a few schools of smaller fish which would give it a more natural look. Big fishes would make the tank look smaller than it actually is. That being said i probably will have 1 or 2 medium sized 'show' fishes.

This is what i currently have in mind:

- Royal Gramma(Gramma loreto) - harem of 5
- Threadfin Cardinals(Apogon leptacanthus) - 8
- Blue/Green Chromis(Chromis viridis) - 6 - from current tank
- Mated pair of Orange Lined Cardinals - from current tank
- Bangaii Cardinals(Pterapogon kauderni) - Pair - maybe
- Pearly Jawfish(Opistognathus aurifrons) - 1
- Helfrich's Firefish(Nemateleotris helfrichi) - Pair
- Yasha Shrimp Goby(Stenogobiops yasha) - 1
with Candycane Pistol Shrimp(Alpheus spp.) - 1
-Potters Angel(Centropyge potteri) - 1 or 2
- School of anthias - Not sure what kind or how many?!?!?
- Tang?? - 1
- Comet/Marine Beta(Calloplesiops altivelis) - 1

Any advice regarding my fish selection would be greatly appreciated, especially with regards to the Anthias. I have no experience with this fish though i have spent countless hours reading up on them. I'm leaning towards the Lyretails. Other fish that interest me are:
- Rainford's Goby
- Red Sea Regal Angel
- Tomini Tang
- Kole Tang
- Chevron Tang
- Sohal Tang(1 of my fav fish but too big for my proposed system)
- Blueline Angel
- Interruptus Angel...i'm dreaming already!!

I'll be getting some pics up once i get the USB ports on my laptop fixed, so till then, reef guru's out there, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
