I've had one for a few years. Other than normal maintenance (take it apart to clean) it's been worry free. I can't imagine having a tank without one on a closed loop.
I have found that if you put too much current through it the trap does not turn. What are people using to push water through it and has anyone found the same situation?
While that situation does happen, it's partially due to the internal Drum that is used. If the drum is balanced, Version 3, it will almost never get stuck. Version 2 can have problems while Version 1 is the most troublesome. I started with a Version 3 and switched to a Version 2. I have to keep the Version 2 clean (more frequent cleaning) or it does jam from time to time.
I've got one lying around somewhere. Didn't bother with it this time around, I am not sure the motion changing is all that beneficial and the plumbing is a bit of a bother. jmo.
Expect (plan) to have to isolate water to maintain it. If it's in a closed loop, you have to be able to shut off the flow before and after the pump. Lots of ball valves!!
I'm a fan of Sequence pumps. I've used a dart on a closed loop with both of the tanks I've had in the living area of my house. IMO the skimmer is the noisiest part of the setup.
I have a pair of Dart pumps. You may ask, why a pair. I have one running and one as a backup. When maintenance is needed I swap pumps and can take my time cleaning the other.
I learned this lesson the hard way, when I had a single dart and the seal let go. Lots of water and no water movement in the tank while it was being fixed.
