Fantastic pictures. It's a shame the last one didn't come out like you were hoping but #2 is great since you can see the little eye balls peeking out.

How many cardinals do you have? Nice pictures, I like the detail in the throat.

Cheers

I have three ochres, I think only one male and two females.
I have two very large old pajamas that have eggs ALL THE TIME, but he won't sit still for a photo. He can see the camera and he turns away from it.
And then I have a school of eight blue-eyes. They are breeding also, I think there may be 2 or 3 males in the group. They are also too quick.

The male ochre is sitting in his little cave. I'll try again before he releases to get an open mouth/shuffle shot. :D

Those are fantastic shots! Congratulations. Do you try to raise the youngsters?

I hope you don't mind, but I shared links to your photos (with a link to this thread, of course) with all of the cardinal breeders over at MOFIB.

Nice, do you have a thread with a FTS or can you post one? Do you try to raise the fry?

Can't wait to see your next series of shots.

Thanks for the compliments! No problem with sharing the pics with the link, thanks!
I couldn't possibly catch them out of my reef, so I have never tried to raise them. In fact, for the years that they have been breeding, I have never actually seen the babies released. It happens in the middle of the night and they are all eaten up by morning. :(

Here is a full tank shot for you, the tank is a peninsula/room divider so you get both sides.

Can't wait to see your next series of shots.

On the subject of eggs, I am following the development of some eggs laid by a giant Tonga Nassarius Snail. Here's two I have taken so far!

They are about 3 days apart, I'll take a few more soon if the eggs are still alive.

Great shots! Lots of detail. What do you shoot with?

A Canon rebel Xti, Sigma 150 macro lens, 550ex flash w/sync cord, tripod. The snail egg shots were taken with a 2x teleconverter on the lens and a 20mm extension tube.

You don't necessarily need to pull the parents. Larval fish are attracted to small lights (very dim) right after hatch and will swim themselves right into larval snaggers. See:

I'm sure there are lots of examples here on RC as well. Those cardinals would probably be pretty tough to raise, but it couldn't hurt to snag a few and at least get some photos, right? :)

Good luck with those snails! (More nice photos, BTW!) That second batch looks about ready to pop. I believe that these pictures are Tongan nassarius larvae, a few hours post-hatch (at 200x):

I never thought of trying to catch the cardinals that way, cool contraption. He released them last night, maybe I can build a vacuum by the next cycle.

I love the microscope images. I had hoped I'd see a few around the eggs. Here are the updates:

The last of the mature eggs:

They are rapidly emptying:

And look what was right next to them this morning, cerith eggs!

I don't know what the other round things are, but I love the tube knots.

Very nice shots,
Flash is always recycling when it's really needed.
I'm somehow not that sorry that my SB600 flash exploded last week and I had to upgrade to an SB800 that has an additional battery for quicker recycle times and much more power so now I'm rarely waiting for it to recycle.

Very cool. I am working with a trio myself of what appears to be the same fish. Male held the eggs for about a week, then swallowed them the first time. He is holding again now. I consider mine Apogon holotaenia, copperstriped cardinals. I have geo working on a larvae trap as we speak so I can try and save some of the fry this time.

Again, very cool shots. :)
