do octopi have the same problem as other soft inverts (cukes, nudibranchs) with getting sucked into the input of powerheads? is it safe to put in my tank? if not, what to do for circulation?
Most species will do fine withsmall powerheads, but the question is not whether the powerhead will kill the octo, but how long until the octo kills the powerhead! ...they love to tear stuff apart, and in my experience most species are capable of removing the housing and the impeller given the opportunity.
We use powerheads, but the animals must be protected from the intake. Small species of juveniles of larger species will crawl into the intake and larger species will often probe the entrance with an arm tip resulting in it being cut off. We use either a foam cover or net secured over the intake. We we first tried using foam, I was dubious that the animals wouldn't squeeze through it to enter the powerhead or other water intakes, but most octopus do not seem to like the texture and leave it alone.
haha, i thought they curious octos might mess around with the PH's. well im planning on using a couple of maxi-jets and i guess ill put some net over the intakes as well. thanks. just wanted to see others' experience
