Has anyone ever got bit by their octo? Is the bite dangerous in octos other than the blue ring?

thanks,
Bill

All octos are venomous, but only the blue ring is deadly (as far as we know). There are a few others that can be pretty painful, but I think the others are all supposed to be pretty mild. Of course I've never been bitten. :)

Aside from the several blue-ring species that have TTX, the one other octopus that is usually considered dangerous is O. motuti. There has been discussion about whether mimics contain venom, but the verdict is still out on that one. Allergic reactions not withstanding, other species vary quite a bit in the severity of the bite. I've been bitten by O. cyanea and O. bocki with no effect, but O. rubescins produced a wound about like a bee sting.

have'nt been bitten but a bimac stuck to my arm by accident once left red marks it actually kinda hurt

octos may bite somtimes out of curiosity, the bite my feel similer to that of a bug bite.all octos have a venom, that is usually not harmful,so far i have heard no bad reports on octobites,so dont worry about it to much

ANY TIME your skin is broken in an aquarium you SHOULD worry about it. Aside from whether the wound was produced by a venomous animal, there are a number of bacteria and other pathogens that can cause serious infections that can be difficult to treat. In fact, there are infections that are known to only occur when aquarists immerse open wounds in their aquaria. Any time you have a fresh cut, puncture or other wound and it is in contact with an aquarium or marine critter, you should wash it thoroughly with soap and water and consider the use of other antiseptic measures. I would add that to openly engage in behavior that might lead to a bite or scratch is a risk you should seriously reconsider. Believe me, there are things growing in aquaria and particularly in the mouths and on the spines of the animals that you keep that you do not want to introduce into your system.
