October Meeting
It's gonna be a Halloween meeting folks. Not sure what that really should mean, maybe raffling black spine urchins and some orange clowns... will have to think about it. But the meeting is the day before Halloween so it seems appropriate to do something.

WHEN
3-5 PM, Saturday, October 30th

WHERE
Steve Colley's house
1 Peaceful Lane
Westport CT 06880
Google Map

LOGISTICS
1) Park in the drive or the street
2) Bring frags to raffle!

OTHER
The house in numbered one (1), but I am NOT the first driveway on the street. Go figure. The Google Map shows me on the corner. I'm not - I'm the 2nd driveway on the right on Peaceful Lane. Number 1 is clearly visible on the mailbox.

ITEMS OF INTEREST
Outside of the great reef conversations our meetings always have, I've got a few things to share that people might find of interest:

  1. My new DIY LED fixture
I've never posted pics of the plans of the finished product, so I'm anxious to see what people think. I spent a lot of time (and $) trying to make this a "nice" DIY project. I'd love to get other people's feedback.
  2. My training-wheels nano
Most people don't go into a lot trouble automating nanos, or making them fancy. But this was my tank to learn reefing on before I started a larger tank, so I went whole hog on this little reef: Aquacontroller, peristaltic 2-part, auto topoff, auto daily w/c's, a fancy 2-chamber water mixing station, and a tiny full function sump (chiller, DSB, algae scrubber, in-sump skimmer, etc).
  3. My high tech planted freshwater discus 180
I know this is a reef club, but this could the most full-goose bozo freshwater tank you'll ever see. Lot's of what's there applies directly to reef tanks too. Here's links to schematics and pics, if you want and advanced look. Plumbing, Electrical, Fish and Plants

So bring some frags if you have them! Bring a some good reef stories! And come ready for some good company and conversation. Refreshments will be provided (soda, beer, munchies).

See ya' there! ;)

Steve, sounds like it will be a great meeting! Unfortunately yet another meeting Im going to have to miss. That is the Saturday when the local families are holding the kids parties for Halloween. No way Ill get a hall-pass from the wife. Will be interesting to see how long our 1 yr old daughter keeps her costume on!!!

I'm there! I'll bring a frag of my ORA Orange Digitata :)

Also I'll see if I can frag off a polyp of True Red Hornets for the raffle.

Should be fun!

I am really gonna try and make it. I would love to see these LED lights in person since I plan on making a fixture soon as I am done doing some research

It would be great to have you! And I'd love to show you the INS and outs of the DIY LED rig. It is far from perfect. But even authors warts, if after seeing it you can say you've seen a cosmetically nicer one... I'll eat my socks. You read it here first. ;)

And Joe! I'm saving my money now for raffle tickets! I want a shot at that hornet!

So far, I'll bring

ORA Orange Digi
True Red Hornet polyp
Super Pink Zoos
A Halloween Crab I got from Exotic Aquatics in Norwalk.

If you haven't attended a meeting yet, this would be a great first meeting!

Cyanno problem cured!

Cyanno problem cured!

I had a serious cyanno outbreak in my tank about six weeks ago. Thanks to Chemiclean which Joe recommended the problem is completely gone. I was in denial of the havoc this was playing with my sps colonies. I lost many beutiful corals.
I just ordered some very nice frags from Atlantis Aq., and they are coloring up . In a few months I hope to resume some fragging and trading again.
I could really use a piece of orange cap and a frag of a blue tort if anyone can help me, actually beggars can't be choosers so I'll take anything anybody can offer. If some $$ need to be included don't be bashful I'm more than happy to pay up.

Regards, Neil

And Scolley, looks like I may be able to pop over to the meeting for an hour! Have a brief window of opportunity before the family fun kicks off that day

I have had a cyano outbreak for the last couple months due to a variety of factors including just not giving the time to maintain the tank. Did you do normal dosage/procedure with the chemiclean?

I have a blue tort that I will be able to give you a piece of as soon as I get the cyano under control.

Yes Greg I did. It worked.....no more cyanno..did a 30 gallon water change 2 days after treatment. I have some I can give you if you need it.
Neil

Seth (good news!), Joe, Greg, Neil - it will be GREAT to see you guys!

And hoping to meet an411. And anyone else that can make it. ;-)

More "stuff to do" is lining up. :-)

  1. I've finished my new salt mixing station. Anxious to show that off.
  2. Joe's donated his PAR meter, so we'll be comparing readings from my MH/PC combo to the LED fixture.
  3. And if anyone's interested - it's time for me to mix a new batch of salt. So interested parties can observer mixing up the new 4-part ESV salt. And you can be the judge of how much a PITA it is - or is not. ;-)

See you soon!

Steve,

I would like to attend. I'll bring a few frags, would anyone like a little green slimer? pink birds nest? Orange monti cap?

Neil, I'll bring you a bag of Chaeto. I need to harvest some from the refugium - it looks great, grows like a weed. If anyone else wants some... I have maybe two full gallon bags available.

Hi Steve,

I will try to make it if I don't have any Halloween stuff going on with the kids at the same time.
I will bring frags of blue zoas (can't remember the fancy name!) and green zoas (originally from Jeff).
I also have some GSP and Xenia but I not sure anyone would want these. If I am wrong, let me know and I will bring them.
Hope to see you guys there.

Didier

Bob, Didier... will be great to see you!

Sounds like we'll have enough to raffle! Thanks! (And Bob, if you can stuff a bit of Chaeto in there for me... it will be much appreciated. ;) )

For those of you that haven't been to one of our Frag Raffles, we generally charge $1 or $2 for a ticket. And we never have more than a dozen people at a meeting - max - so a $5 or $10 investment in tickets almost assures you of going home with a nice frag of your choice. It's always fun, and also happens to be the sole form of money raising we do for the club. Keeps the web site running, and allows us to continue saving for shared club equipment, like a PAR meter. :)

And as an open message to anyone "considering" dropping by... we've noticed that attendance is often off when we hold meetings at people's homes. Except, of course, Seth's Bar-B-Que's which are always a big draw. So if you're concerned about it being in someone's home... don't be! Feel free to come on by and say "Hi"!

Some people are regulars, but many we don't see but once/twice a year. So it's not like you're walking into some private function - new faces, and people that need an introduction to other people in the gathering is commonplace (and fun).

Should be a good time.

Hey Steve,

Just wanted to let you know that I will be coming. Looking forward to meeting all of you! Also I'm gonna bring a few ricordeas to raffle/trade. See everyone tomorrow.

-Nick
